“For 2018, SLU was listed as 94 out of the country’s top 311 national universities” (slu.edu). Picking the right university for a high school student to continue their education with is one of the most difficult yet important decisions in one’s life. There are many factors that need to be addressed when making this decision-- location, size, costs and curriculum being some of the most important. I believe that Saint Louis University is the perfect place for me based on all of these factors. SLU is conveniently very close to my home town, Freeburg, Illinois. Within the program of English, there are many different professions one could choose to pursue. Some of these include, teaching (whether it be lower, high school, or higher education), writing, marketing, news reporting, editing, journalism, and public relations. Since 2001, 90 percent of SLU’s English doctoral students found jobs and 73 percent found academic positions. Political Science is the study of government, public policies, and political behaviors (Why Major). While studying Political Science, students may major in political science as the general program or they can pick a more specific area to concentrate on. Some examples of these areas are: American politics, international affairs, gender and politics, political theory and public policy. Majoring in Political Science can open up doors for you to find jobs in “private for-profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as public sector organizations” (Why Major). Specifically, SLU’s program prepares its students for “careers in government, foreign service, national or international business and nonprofit organizations and NGOs” (slu.edu). The English program allows for students to have a prominent voice in shaping examination and thesis boards and offers programs that promote professionalism among the graduate students through career preparation workshops, trips to conferences and on-campus forums (slu.edu). Allowing students to have a say in how they pursue their education is essential for overall success and happiness. The program also gives students the opportunities for close interactions with faculty and fellow students, as well as to run more that six organizations. The Political Science program gives its students an “expertise in national politics and policy, in comparative and international politics, or in political theory and analysis” (slu.edu). Therefore, no matter the program one chooses within the Political Science program, SLU provides one with an in depth education on the specific subject. Within all of these options, there is an opportunity to take an internship-- which would be very beneficial towards one’s future career.
