CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
This chapter will introduce the importance of English and provide the background of the study which is followed by the statement of the problem. Besides, the objective of this study will be defined and research questions will be stated. Then, the pedagogical benefits of this research will be addressed and the limitation of the research will be referred to. Finally, an overview of chapers in this study will be glanced at.
1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Based on the statement of the problem, the objective of this study was to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of the use of pictures in teaching writing a descriptive paragraph for the students with the hope to improve students’ writing proficiency at the eleventh graders at Nguyen Khuyen high school in the academic year of 2014- 2015.
1.4. RESEARCH QUESTION
The matter that will be investigated in this study is:
"How is the effectiveness of using pictures to teach writing descriptive paragraphs to the eleventh graders of Nguyen Khuyen High School in the academic year of 2014- 2015?"
In order to answer this question, the researcher supposed the minor following questions:
1. What are difficulties the students at Nguyen Khuyen high school facing while learning the writing skill?
2. How is the effect of applying pictures for teaching descriptive paragraphs?
1.5. THE PEDAGOGICAL
English colonists were trying to push west, further into the New World. In doing this they went into the Ohio Valley making the French upset because they had already set up trade there. This caused the French to build military strongholds, the biggest being in southwest Pennsylvania, trying to keep the English out. Colonists in Virginia decided to retaliate against the French.
As the Cold War raged on, the United States continued to try and contain the spread of communism. A popular belief during this time was the domino theory, which stated that if a country fell to communism, the surrounding countries would also fall. Therefore, the United States began sending aid to the South Vietnamese in order to resist the communist North. However, this quickly escalated into more and more troops being supplied, and the Vietnam War began to take shape. The Vietnam War would be marked by failure in both military and political leadership, angering the American public at every turn.
The Vietnam War was fought between the North and South Vietnamese over Communism. The North pushed for a communist regime while the South favored a more democratic government. During the time of this war, the U.S. was pushing towards containing Communism, and vowed to support any nation resisting communism. Although America’s policy of containment had good intentions, this often led to the support of corrupt leaders and governments. President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam was Catholic and did not lead well.
The Vietnam War is considered one of the most controversial wars in United States history. The United States is one of the greatest superpowers at the time and were seen as the helping hand for doing the right thing. The United States were dragged into this war in order to stop the spread of communism throughout the Democratic South Korea. Many Americans saw this as the United States intervening in another country’s civil war which is not our duty. Americans also used the draft in a poor way affecting the young and African American population.
The Vietnam War was one of the longest lasting conflicts in American history starting on November 1st, 1955. Dwight Eisenhower began the United States' involvement with the Vietnam War by creating the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization to help squelch communist uprisings in the area. With conflicts growing between the Communist North Vietnamese and the anti- Communist South Vietnamese the U.S sent the first troops in 1965 to aid in stopping the spread of Communism. Even after 41 years of the war being over people still debate the legality of the vietnam war. Some say under the international laws of war it was legal and just for America to intervene with the conflict.

An example of this is asking a question relating to the Outsiders, “Which one of your parents are you most like? What similarities do you share?”
This historical analysis will define the imperial impact of French colonialism and the influence of Chinese communism and on the Vietnamese people in the pre-WWII era. The important role of China in the development of Vietnam’s history is crucial to understand the ways in which foreign colonists could not sustain dominance over these peoples. In the past, Northern Vietnam had been a part of China, which defines the close relationship that these people had with a larger and more powerful empire in this region of the world. This chapter can help young writers in English class with their papers in many different ways. For instance, Trimble gives examples on what a veteran writer does in order to make their writing interesting. He also gives out techniques on how you can get a reader’s attention or how you can fix your writing to make it readable instead of having nonsense. What makes this difficult for me as a writer is that I write what ever comes to my mind and it will not make sense. Another thing that makes it difficult for me as a writer is that I am not good at getting the readers attention and having him hooked on to my work.

Kennedy, March 1968 The Vietnam War is one of the most controversial events in American history. The war was between communist North Vietnam and the democratic South Vietnamese. Many Americans felt that we entered the war under false pretenses and were interfering in a civil war that we didn’t belong.
Assignment 1 In the excerpt, “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay” by Marie Foley, it reveals how the Five-Paragraph Essay formula as an unnatural method of writing. Foley shows that this formula is used by teachers as a strategy for survival, since it would be easier to teach a class the formula of five-paragraph than to teach the students individually. Also that this formula was originally was planned to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. It’s a useful step for beginning student to write and to overcome writer’s block.

When reading the book, “Fahrenheit 451” and the article, “The Great Imagination Heist” they argue the same topics yet different. The are both saying arguing about books and technology. In the book the character Captain Beatty has a interesting conversation with Montag about books and why they must burn them. In the article it is claiming why we should read more and be more involved in reality. Both stories give good valid logic to behind their thoughts to point out the claim.
The author elicits the emotions of his readers through his personal narrations, careful choice of words and phrases among others. Right from the start, the author describes his traumatic experience in English writing class and ways he felt misunderstood in order to emotionally appeal to the audience. He intends to persuade the audience to acquire his position by triggering their emotions of sympathy. In addition, his soft tone has equally earned him pity. Concisely, Bruce Ballenger’s article on the importance of poor writing helps unravel several issues in effective English teaching practice.
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. It also includes understanding a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that defines each type. In order too efficiently meet my goal of becoming a better writer, it was very important to have my work evaluated by others and myself as well. The use of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing all are the important aspects in this course.
During the age of exploration France was one of the biggest countries to imperialize in the 1800. France desired control of some Indochina for money, resources and labour. France unfortunately cared less about the lives that where spent and more about the resources. For this reason the native people of Indochina suffered greatly at the hands of French imperialism.
