E (Everett): Today we have Elon Musk. Elon, thank you for joining us. EM (Elon Musk): Thanks for having me. E: So, I wanted to spend the time today talking about entrepreneurship and what you think defines an entrepreneur. I know that a lot of the interviews you do often involve talking about the more technical aspects of SpaceX and Tesla, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to discuss entrepreneurship. To start off, could you tell us a little about your background before SpaceX and Tesla? EM: Yeah, sure. Much less know that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. At one point I did think that inventing and creating new things would be cool to do for a living… but I wasn’t sure if that meant I had to start my own company to make new things, or work for a company that was really innovative. It wasn’t until college when I really thought about starting my own company. I didn’t make my way out to Silicon Valley until I was a graduate student, I was studying applied physics at Stanford. That was around 1995, when the Internet was still really new. I did think that the Internet would change the world though, and I wanted to be a part of that. My first step towards that was to get a job. I applied for a job at Netscape, but I didn 't get a reply. I wasn’t even thinking yet of starting my own company. I thought for sure that I would get a reply from Netscape. I had a physics and economics degree, and on top of that I was studying applied physics and materials science. For whatever reason, I didn 't get a reply from Netscape and I was so determined to get a job that I went to their offices and waited around in the main lobby. So I 'm just like standing in the lobby… it was a pretty embarrassing moment for me. I ended up leaving because I just couldn’t gather up the courage to talk to someone. Looking back, I probably didn’t get a reply because I didn’t have a computer science degree...or some experience as a software
