Social Media and Environmental Activism: Clicktivism or Paradigm shift?
Abstract
Environmentalist groups have often relied on grassroots movements, traditional media or localised campaigns to spread awareness and information regarding various environmental issues. However, over the past decade internet has reinvented the forms and practices of activism all around the world. It allows people to participate in simultaneous movements and gives the activists an alternate space to present their side of the story. The paper examines whether the use of social media spurs environmental activism and public engagement.

But issues of war and politics dominated the global debates. It was only during 1970s and 80s the problems of the environment were being highlighted. In India the negligence to these issues was worse. The government set up the ministry of environment and forests as late as 1985.
At present we have a number of research institutes, Organisations, NGOs for example, Forest Research Institute, Centre for Science and Environment, Greenpeace, The World Wide Fund for Nature, Swechha which raises awareness about pollution or Aaranyak, which focusses on wildlife conservation. Due to these combined efforts, environmental issues are now part of the national and global discourse.

Unlike humans trying to reconnect back to nature, we rather seem to want to create an artificial nature in our cage of industrious lives. Bill McKibben and Derrick Jensen were born in 1960 in the U.S.A., and both have accomplished successful academic backgrounds. McKibben graduated from Harvard University in 1982, and Derrick Jensen graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Mineral engineering in 1983. Both are environmental activists and have written many articles and books. Two of their articles “Waste Not, Want Not” by Bill McKibben and “Forget Shorter Showers” by Jensen are published in the Bedford Reader book (557-567). When we analyze these articles both authors agree on consumers contribution to environmental pollution, but they have different points of views concerning whether individuals or industrialists cause more environmental pollution.
For the United States, the mid-nineteenth century is a time when social activism in American society is reflected in the writing. These writers were determined to change the way of life, if not for themselves, for someone else. Their writings would become incite to some of the deepest issues of the time. First, social activism in America is seen in the efforts of women to gain legal and social equality as citizens and as human beings in their private lives. Introduction There is great contention regarding the impact of social media on political activism in Canada. While social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter offer users new opportunities to communicate, share, and disseminate memes and ideas, they also promote or facilitate the movement into streets for protests or other forms of activity. The arguments against social media generally revolve around its disposition towards remaining sedentary, behind the screen of a laptop or smart phone, writing short messages for the opposition to witness instead of actually making a physical presence in the real world. Alternatively, those who regularly engage in social media activism argue that they are raising awareness for their cause, which is theoretically true if one is to consider the sudden surge in discussion about specific topics.
