Come to a mass meeting, Monday at 7:00 P.M., at the Holt Street Baptist Church for further instruction.” Due to the fact that over seventy-five percent of bus riders were African Americans, the bus company lost over $750,000: over seven million dollars today. Many African Americans carpooled or walked when they needed to travel. The participaters in the boycott persisted though peaceful protesting, demonstrating the power peaceful protests had. Eventually, King had come up with three things that he would show to the city commissioners, “the black citizens of the city would not return to the buses until: courteous treatment by the bus operators was guaranteed; passengers were seated on a first-come, first-served basis; and black bus operators were employed on predominantly black routes.”
I see families their eating dinner because they one have no food at their home or two because they stay at the homeless shelter. I think situational and generational poverty hurts all of us and working to fix it will bring about advantages to the society as a whole. Any chance I get I help people because there has been numerous of times people have helped me.
It was a town for homeless people To Kill A Mockingbird is a book where a dad is due to defend a black person and he teaches his children not be racist or judge other people on how they act or on what they do or look like. The dust bowl destroyed a lot of things and it cause a lot of people to have nothing. Like in the book, Mr.Cunningham did not have any money to pay people so he had to use his own food he
Many immigrants in The Jungle were depicted as often unable to even afford enough food to feed their families on a day to day basis, to the point where some people went digging in the dump for things to eat, “ To this place there came every day many hundreds of wagon-loads of garbage and trash from the lake front, where the rich people lived; and in the heaps the children raked for food”(p231). When they could afford food it was often full of chemicals, watered-down, or not even actual food. “How could they know that the pale-blue milk that they bought around the corner was watered, and doctored with formaldehyde besides?”(p86). However, the quality of the food Jurgis and his family were eating could be considered a small concern considering the other issues they dealt with, like their debt on the house. They were evicted after they missed payments on the houses they “bought”, resulting in them freezing to death in the winter, and the house being resold to another unsuspecting
Our natural resources are at risk every time fracking occurs. Fracking needs to be banned since it is hurting our health and that it drains our natural and limited resources required for us to sustain life. Water is an essential to living and it is a need. Without it we would be dead from the dehydration. Fracking in this case can contaminate it to where we cannot drink it and if we do it can lead to death or a trip to the hospital:
If you could save your mothers life by walking a couple yards to the nearest trash can would you? Of course you would! Dumping plastics into our oceans is a huge problem for our environment and the people that live in it. Plastics are killing our marine life.
Now, the blessed few people who do reach out to the homeless have been criminalized as well. Fort Lauderdale, Florida lawmakers put one such ordinance in place on October 22, 2014. The new law severely restricts when and where citizens may feed the homeless, making it nearly impossible for charity groups to continue (Alanez, 2014). As more cities across our nation enact laws against feeding the homeless, so too are we hearing more stories about individuals who have faced arrest, fines, and jail time for feeding the homeless. This was the case with ninety-year-old Arnold Abbott.
Have you ever wondered just how many single parents that you pass on your way to work or school that are homeless, living in shelters, or on the streets? Well, I have firsthand experience on what it is like to be homeless in a single parent household during the great recession of 2008. My mother struggled during this time to provide for me and my younger sister, but with no job, and no money, we were no different than the millions of other single parent families that were now on the outside looking in. We ended up packing up what little items we could and lived out of our van for three months in an isolated camp ground. My mother ended up finding a decent minimum wage job along with receiving a housing voucher to move into an apartment complex
Thousands of Puerto Ricans faced consequences of the hurricane and are still in recovery. Now I will tell my journey of overcoming hurricane Maria. Once we got hurricane warnings, we went to grocery stores and bought food that can be eaten and prepared without electricity because we knew we were going to be without electricity for some time. We also bought a power generator to provide electricity after the hurricane. We went outside and picked up anything
Overfishing, by definition, is fishing until fish stocks are at unacceptable levels in any body of water, particularly the ocean. Overfishing creates a complex, interconnected web of problems which is difficult to untangle. For starters, it depletes fish populations ruthlessly. As a
Although Hurricane Katrina wasn’t expected to ever hit land, it is one of the biggest storms to hit the United States. The storm devastated the city and the country more than anyone would have every thought. Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers, displays many of the disastrous events that take place during and after Hurricane Katrina. The book follows Zeitoun and his wife Kathy, a Muslim couple, with four kids and their own painting business, through the storm. After the storm, while Kathy and the kids are staying with friends and family, Zeitoun rides around in his canoe rescuing survivors and watching his properties which has a phone he uses to keep in touch with Kathy.
As humans expand they are producing more waste and need a place for it to go. In some countries, people just pump the waste into the water, as a result it is harming the manatees. The waste that humans are pumping into the ocean is causing toxic algae which the manatee eats and it makes the sick or could kill them. The waste from humans hurts the manatee also by
Every year, thousands of migrants cross the Mediterranean (including refugees from Syria and Eritrea) in inflatable motorboats. Few however, survived such dangerous journeys. It is estimated that in 2014 alone, about 1850 migrants had drowned on their way to Europe. Christopher Catrambone a humanitarian, entrepreneur and adventurer, appalled by this incident, took it upon himself to find a solution. He set up a search and rescue operation.
Our basement has flooded! What shall we do?” This was a sentence that many people said during hurricanes such as hurricane Irene in late August of 2011. In the article on horseshoe crabs on NJ.com, the author wrote: “In Hurricane Sandy’s reshuffling of Jersey’s coastal geography, 70 percent of the horseshoe crab habitat was lost.” This means that many horseshoe crabs will not find a place to breed or may find it difficult to find a place.
The article, “Food Waste Is Becoming Serious Economic and Environmental Issue, Report Says,” by Ron Nixon, talks about food waste and of plans on how to stop it. Specifically, Nixon argues that there are millions of people all over the country that don’t have enough to eat. Also that there are people that go to bed hungry most days, while others are throwing away extra scraps they didn’t eat. Nixon writes about the tons of food thrown in the trash every week, resulting in economic and environmental issues. Also about how the Earth’s landfills then get filled up with even more garbage.
