What is Environmental Hypoxia and how it affects our lives? Environmental hypoxia is a case where an environment affected by low rate of oxygen in which could cause severe bad health condition to the organisms living around it. Environmental hypoxia refers to a condition where there is low or depleted oxygen in a water body. In some cases, a water body which is hypoxic causes dead zones. These dead zones are areas that could not sustain life due to hypoxic environmental condition. While it sounds more natural as it is caused by algae. However, it is mostly the action of humans that trigger the environmental condition of hypoxia.
Environmental hypoxia was mostly happened in water. Environmental hypoxia is mostly caused by nutrients pollution in a water environment. As humans used fertilizer on either their crops, golf fields, or their plants, the

The Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone is located in the northern Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana and Texas which was first documented in 1972. “The 2013 area of low oxygen in the Gulf of Mexico, commonly known as the hypoxic zone or "Dead Zone," was 15,120 square kilometers (5,800 square miles), which was smaller than predicted”, the United States Environmental Protection Agency says. United States researchers conclude that strong winds in the Gulf of Mexico contributed to moving the nutrients throughout the river and mix them together. The size of the 2013 hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico is about double the measured size of the zone in 2012, it is due to the summer drought conditions in the Mississippi River Basin that reduced nutrient outputs into the Gulf of Mexico happened. In 2013, the zone of oxygen-depleted bottom-water was above both the long-term average and also the five-year average. In this case of Gulf of Mexico, hypoxia affects the spatial distribution of marine animals. This includes Atlantic croaker and brown
Disease caused by pollution might be caused by water pollution or air pollution, this is when the environment around a person is dirty. Examples are: Rickets, anemia,
All organisms need oxygen to survive and when their is not enough oxygen, it leaves plants and animals to die. The area of water where there is a low count of oxygen are often called a dead zones. Also, an increase of the pH level in the water can be created because of algae blooms. The toxic killing algae can make humans sick. For the aquatic animals, these toxins attack mainly the organisms liver and nervous system (Nitrogen and
MUSSEL INVASION MUSSEL INVASION Zebra mussel is a striped mussel that has shown up in place like the Hudson river. zebra mussel came from the southern lakes of Russia and Ukraine. It “accidentally” went to other places like the Hudson river and became an invasive species and might be a worldwide problem. In the Hudson river the present of phytoplankton has drop by 80 percent.
For example, algal blooms can lead to a reduction in the amount of light that can make it through the water (Rice University, 2013). This causes plants to die off, which then results in oxygen depletion. Oxygen depletion means that there is little to no oxygen in the water. An environment becomes anoxic when it has zero amounts of oxygen (Darley et al., 2013). This results
In today 's modern world as we expand, we are taking away habitats from animals and other diverse ecosystems. By doing this we are causes animals to become endangered and extinct. One animal that is harmed by the expansion of humans is the manatee. The manatee lives in warm shallow water next the the shore because that is where the animals have access to food and other resources.
The Board doesn't think enough ocean habitats are safe. They support this with “only 1 percent of marine habitats (are) strictly protected” (par.12). This last statistic allows the reader to realize just how much needs to
Because of the pollution, most of the plants in the surrounding area wither and it kills the animals in the water. Without vegetation, oxygen can’t be created and that will lead to humanity’s downfall. The author states that In the eejit pens, the area is so polluted that sometimes there's no oxygen in the air and it becomes still because of this the eejits sometimes sleep in the fields so they don’t suffocate. This information helps inform us that polluted air can be deadly. This also tells us that maybe there aren't any plants or vegetation producing oxygen in that area and that's why the air goes still.
Drinking water sources have been contaminated with explosive methane, as well as other dangerous substances, such as benzene and arsenic, that can cause cancer and other serious illnesses. Toxic chemicals, as well as erosion and runoff from drilling operations, have fouled
Intro: Water pollution has caused so many problems to our waterways that no one really knows how to help. Water pollution caused; dead zones, oil spills, garbage floating around, and unsafe drinking water. People disagree about water pollution because, people have found ways to improve and help out the problem that water pollution has caused around the world. Others believe that that water pollution has created situations and are in the process of figuring out solutions. Marine life habitats are getting destroyed, marine life is declining everyday, how and where the garbage is getting into the oceans, and the drinking water is becoming seriously unsafe to drink.
Many animals, whether they live in the ocean or the arctic are affected by climate change. Climate Change affects everybody in the world, even though some choose to ignore it, which is why it would be in humanity’s best interest to come together and find a solution. Burning fossil fuels and the increase of greenhouse gases is causing the earth to warm. Although this gas is the source of the problem we still need it, without this gas the earth would be very cold. What the greenhouse effect is a layer of gas that surrounds the earth,
In the worst case scenario these animals will become extinct in the future. Carbon dioxide is well known as CO2. The level of carbon dioxide in the ocean has increased over the past years. The ocean dissolves the emissions of humans and the combustion of fossil fuel. Once being dissolved, the carbon dioxide creates
Ever since the industrial revolution commenced, around one third of the carbon dioxide released by human interference has been absorbed by the ocean, which is one of the reasons of the drastic change in climate as well. Without the ocean absorbing carbon dioxide, the carbon dioxide n the atmosphere would be drastically higher, with possibly increasing the levels of climate change. The point of the research is to see how will the pH affect the organisms in the marine ecosystem and does carbonation affect an organism’s mass and form. Many organisms that are part of the marine food chain are going to be affected by ocean acidification due the levels of acidity deteriorating the calcium carbonate within the animal. It turns out
Pollution is the introduction or release of substances or energy that decrease the quality of the marine environment. Many pollutants are toxic of harmful to marine life (Castro and Huber, 2010). South Africa is known around the world for being one of the most diverse marine environment in the world, with 83% of the known fish families residing in South Africa (Van der Elst, 2007). There are also many marine species that are endemic to South Africa, which means they are only found in South Africa. Almost 30% of the South African population lives on the coastline (Taljaard et al. 2006), which has led to the urbanization of the coastlines and which then led to the industrialization of these areas.
Marine pollution such as presence of organic matter in the ocean can result in the condition known as hypoxia or oxygen depletion and this can have adverse effect on the marine life including plant and animals and fish. Death of these fish can result in loss of millions of US dollars that are generate from the fishing industry. Marine pollution can also result in presence of foul smell resulting from the decomposing sewage being directed to the ocean and this has the effects to hinder recreational activities taking place in the sea as well as cause discomfort and breathing problem to the surrounding population (Laura, 11).marine pollution can also result in danger to human health. The human swimmers and water sport lovers can become endangered by swimming in the polluted marine waters (Laura,
The ocean is nowadays undergoing numerous environmental issues that further lead to marine pollution. Marine pollution is a very serious environmental issue that most of the countries of the world encounter. Aquatic littering is considered as one of the major causes of marine environment. The misleading use of the marine environment is extremely impacting the marine life and ecosystems. Moreover, the total amount of toxins and debris discharged by human beings is incredibly increasing in today 's world.
