The Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone is located in the northern Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana and Texas which was first documented in 1972. “The 2013 area of low oxygen in the Gulf of Mexico, commonly known as the hypoxic zone or "Dead Zone," was 15,120 square kilometers (5,800 square miles), which was smaller than predicted”, the United States Environmental Protection Agency says. United States researchers conclude that strong winds in the Gulf of Mexico contributed to moving the nutrients throughout the river and mix them together. The size of the 2013 hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico is about double the measured size of the zone in 2012, it is due to the summer drought conditions in the Mississippi River Basin that reduced nutrient outputs into the Gulf of Mexico happened. In 2013, the zone of oxygen-depleted bottom-water was above both the long-term average and also the five-year average. In this case of Gulf of Mexico, hypoxia affects the spatial distribution of marine animals. This includes Atlantic croaker and brown
