Teresa Blote April 13, 2015 8B Anthem Essay In class, we recently finished reading the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. Rand was born February 2nd, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. In Anthem, published in 1938, Rand writes how Equality 7-2521 is treated unfairly amongst his society starting with being assigned the menial job of a Street Sweeper.
When he tried to sneak back to where he was supposed to be, it was too late. The Council questioned, lashed, and beat him trying to find out where he had been. Nevertheless, he never told. Through the lashing and beating Equality 7-2521 withstood the physical torture to protect his discovery. After being there for so long, he knew that he had to escape.
Every society in the world from past and present have laws that control the citizens, and are made to uphold order. The main troupe of a dystopian novel is the oppressive government. This is also seen in Anthem by Ayn Rand. The society is controlling and focuses on the elimination of individuality, and this is the main way that the Council promotes the order of their civilization. The laws of Equality 7-2521's society are there to advocate order and to justify the use of collectivism, however the society that Equality 7-2521 later envisions will not include any of these laws in their current forms.
We know that we are evil, but there is no will in us and no power to resist it.”(Rand 2) Equality-7-2521 had struggles with remorse across the entire chapter due to the wrongdoing he committed against the supposed mentors in his life. He believes that by biting the hand that fed him, they ended up in the tunnel, penning this letter. Proceeding into the Novel, Equality 7-2521 was viewed as someone with a burning curiosity, so he was sent to the Home of the Sweet Sweepers and that’s when they made a groundbreaking discovery, they saw “iron rings as steps leading down a shaft into a darkness without a bottom.” We shall go down,” said the character International 4-8818.”
Equality 7-2521 then goes back to show the Council what he invented but the Council did not accept mainly because of the thought that he was thinking as “I” not “we”. “‘Our brothers!’ we said. ‘We matter not, nor our transgression. It is only out brother men who matter.
Anthem is writing as a journey of Equality 7-2521, a young man living in the future in which people have lost all knowledge of individualism, for not even knowing the word "I" and can only speak of himself as "We." Everyone lives and work in collective groups and he is assigned to a Street Sweeper of the city by the Council of Vocations. However, Equality 7-2521 try to lead himself to recreate electric light and how it can be harnessed to human benefit. He has been taught that it is a sin to harbor secret ambitions, and so he believes he is guilty. Equality 's struggle to be free and to reach an individual life/ When he presents his discovery to the Council of Scholars, they punish him for daring to act as an individual and threaten to destroy his creation.
Smarter than any of his other brothers, Equality rapidly starts to realize what his cities council is trying to do to take away his rights as a human being. This short novel, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, a man by the name of Equality 7-2521 was a more intelligent than his other brothers in the community, and he was not content with sitting around letting the council try to brainwash everyone else, so he breaks several laws in the process of trying to discover new things that the council is trying to hide from him and his brothers. The council was not aware of these things and they were not going to let him try to do anything against them. To try to prevent anything detrimental from happening, they assigned him the job as a street sweeper where he couldn’t use any of his quick-witted mind against them
Equality, the man of many names. The novella “Anthem” by Ayn Rand is about a character which is not like the rest and is trapped in a deranged, collectivist society, where everyone is ONE. The council selects who mates with who, which job each citizen receives and how they are educated. No One is allowed to prefer one person over another or have a personal life. Equality flees this society by escaping to the Uncharted Forest where he finds a home and stays there with Liberty 5-3000, a woman who Equality falls in love with.
Aristotle's assertions that the worst form of inequality Is to make unequal things equal is correct because forcing people to be the same in all ways can lead to restricting people to accomplish their full potential, People are also able to combine their unique talents for the betterment of all and are not restricted by everyone being the same limiting their abilities. To begin, the ability of people to be different allows them to use their minds in different ways and have the freedom to create and discover new things. In Ayn Rand's book Anthem, the protagonist of the book Equality 7-2521 lives in a world of equality where no one is allowed to be alone or explore their brains. Equality having a more Kean brain than the others starts to explore
Equality 7-2521 can free himself from collectivism because he was independent. In the novel Anthem Ayn Rand makes us comprehend that Equality had and inner struggle and
In Chamber 1, in August 2007 six miners got trapped underground after an earthquake at the Crandall Canyon coal mine in Utah. The rescue team began the rescuing mission by placing seismic listening devices above ground and setting off dynamites which was a indication for the miners below to start making noise in any way possible. This resulted in failure with no sound being caught by the listening devices. Afterwards, six boreholes were drilled in different areas of the mine, so oxygen sensors, cameras, and microphones could be placed inside. This plan also failed due to misreadings of the oxygen.
The council did everything to make him less of a danger to their society, such as leaving him Street Sweeper that requires no knowledge. As a Street Sweeper, Equality 7-2521 is restricted the resources needed in order to reach his goal of learning. The council also turned away Equality’s glass box because it is “dangerous” to the society. The council is Equality 7-2521’s biggest nemesis resorting in him escaping the
¨We do not wonder at this new sin of ours. It is our second transgression of Preference, for we do not think of all our brothers, as we must, but only of one, and their name is Liberty 5-300. We do not know why we think of them” (Rand 41).
