March 25, 2023 Diversity, equity, and inclusion did not become an important part of my life until I became a college student. I grew up in a predominantly white town, in a school with few attempts to build a community that surrounded all races, genders, religion, and socioeconomic status. I did not know of many people that did not have a similar background as me. I was never asked questions about what diversity means to me, even in job interviews or the classroom. Additionally, I was not trained on how I would handle a situation that deals with insensitive remarks, such as sexism, racism, or even homophobia. I want to open other people’s minds and help them feel safe and more comfortable in college. I learned how to do this during the peer facilitation training during the summer. This position and training expanded my knowledge and leadership skills. I was able to become more acquainted with creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive space for all. Diversity, equity, and inclusion became a necessity to me. I went from not understanding what these terms meant to being well acclimated with them. Diversity means creating an environment where everyone feels accepted and valued based on their background. Diversity allows people to share their intersecting identities with each other and educate people about different identities. Equity means creating equal opportunities for everyone of any race, ability, gender, religion, and socioeconomic status. Inclusion means creating equal access opportunities in the classroom, extracurricular activities, and work. I am able to accomplish this in my position as a peer facilitator on Ramapo’s campus. Additionally, I wanted to help the campus remain a positive space for everyone, thus I decided to apply for an on campus
Some strategies that can be used to enrich children’s understanding and respect for cultural identities within the services community may include: - • providing activities and opportunities that engage other cultures These activities could be a culture celebration for a day or week such as Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day, Christmas etc., where the children could come dressed up as something that represents that particular culture i.e. dragon, leppricon, Noah etc. and play games that originated from that culture, do drawings of things found in that culture or read books at story time that give information and embraces the culture. • engaging parents and families to discuss cultural practices.
Moreover, I hope to find other organizations and opportunities to serve others, either on or off campus, that will make others' lives better, possibly even becoming involved in initiatives run by the local school system, since I hope to be heavily involved in at least one of the local schools as I
Sydney Osgood Mr. Marinez U.S. History 23 March 2023 Women and Minorities’ progression during WWII The year is 1939 and WWII has just started if you are a man over the age of 21 you have been drafted into battle, but for women and minorities, WWII looked a lot different. Women and minorities stayed on the homefront and took over the jobs that men who got drafted once had. Some of these jobs included factory work, farming, nursing, engineering, and any other job that helped the war effort.
Throughout my high school career, I have taken opportunities to be an active community member through community service. Service that I have participated in has given me experience being a mentor and educator. As a link Crew leader, I volunteered my time to help the incoming freshmen in my community/ school district assimilate into their new environment. I went to training, followed a link crew curriculum, guided them in activities, offered advice, and served as a role model for the students. I helped them feel welcome and prepared to take on high school.
To me, this comes in the form of attending APU’s Educational and Clinical Counseling program and pursuing a career that allows me to demonstrate my ability in helping others achieve their goals. The rigorous design of this program will be a challenge to my academic grit and a testament to the skills I developed during my three years as a UCR undergraduate. The teachings and standards of this program will serve as a means of evaluating my professional experience after dedicating the last four years to supporting low-income students of color in a school environment. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have also grown as a person by developing my conscientious, agreeable, and inquisitive personality traits that allow me to create healthy relationships and remain optimistic for the future. My academic, professional, and personal characteristics have revealed a road leading to APU’s Educational and Clinical Counseling program and I wish to materialize my vision alongside this
Students can put this into practice by forming close bonds with their friends, working together on projects, and becoming active members of their communities. Additionally, they should speak up for people who may be marginalized or underrepresented since empowering others is not only a critical leadership quality but is also a key component of building a more just and equitable
Furthermore, I believe I owe it to future patients, employers and fellow professionals to have the largest knowledge base and most readily accessible skills possible and to utilize the unique experiences I have been granted. I have managed, throughout busy class schedules and often full-time work, to be volunteering on a long mission to Peru to work with children, mentor as a Middle School Youth minister, a Spanish and ASL medical translator in clinics 300% below the poverty line, and a Patient Care Technician in the Emergency Room and eventually the NICU per invitation from the Senior Staff of the Women and Children's Center. I have enjoyed the vitality of these diverse settings as well as growing in empathy while working with people from very unique backgrounds and family needs. I also volunteer as an on-call counselor for a crisis family support center as a primary advisor for two single mothers who require translation services. In his 1963 speech, “I Have a Dream,” Martin Luther King, Jr. asserts that African Americans must be empowering yet placid in their pursuit to gain freedom from racial prejudice. The Emancipation Proclamation gave many Negroes hope and presumed freedom a century ago. However, Negroes are still struggling for freedom in a land where they are treated unjustly and live in poverty. Both the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence supposedly give all men, including black men, equal rights, but America has not been upholding its promise.
I hope to bring diversity to all who walk on the campus. My background has shaped me into the intelligent African American woman I am today. Without growing up in the “hood”, I may have not been able to find the best career that interested me. I also would not have been able over all the challenges thrown at me. Instead I remained determined and motivated so that I was able to achieve all of the goals set before me.
It is an opportunity to create an environment where all individuals can contribute their unique perspectives and experiences to the collective knowledge. By embracing diversity, we are able to push past our preconceived notions and challenge the status quo. We can create a culture of understanding and respect for all individuals, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or other differences. Inclusivity allows us to see beyond our own experiences and gain new insights from those who are different from us. This helps us become better problem solvers, innovators and collaborators in whatever field we choose to pursue.
Equity dismantles white supremacy, enhances growth, reduces conflict, and places power in citizens. When people feel valued, safe, and supported they can be less fatigued and focus more on their pursuits and well-being. Additionally, I have the honor and duty to teach my 3 children to be actively anti racist. Creating paradigm shifts for future generations will help ensure sustainability of inclusive and equitable environments. Reflect on a time when you were confronted with a specific situation that challenged your thoughts on an issue.
Diversity Scholarship Essay How will you contribute to the diversity at the University of Kentucky? For some time of my life, I never considered myself diverse. To me during that time growing up, I thought to be a part of the diverse minority it meant that you did not belong.

It is important for teachers to create an environment that promotes fairness in order for students to succeed. Equality and equity are both needed to do this. Equality in a class means every student has the same opportunity to succeed. Making accommodations for students is called equity. This is needed in a class to ensure an equal opportunity to succeed is possible for every student.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once had a dream in which he calls for an end to racism in the U.S. and calls for civil and economic rights. So much has changed since then, but there are still problems that are in the process of being solved. When a person treats a group differently because of that group 's religion, it 's unfair. For a character who has different beliefs, it should not address them the right to criticize another individual. Nowadays, humans judge other humans by the way there features stand out.
