The Legal Landscape: Equality and Gender Pronouns The world is becoming a more and more complex place to live, and gender-bending identity politics are certainly not making matters clearer. There has been recent legislation in certain areas of the United States and Canada that require employers to use an employee’s preferred gender pronoun, regardless of their sex at birth, such as “him” or “her,” with refusal fined, or punishable in the court of law. Using widely recognized, accepted pronouns is not the issue for those who oppose this legislation. It is the requirement of, the usage of, an ever-growing list of newly created pronouns such as “zim” or “zer,” that tread into dangerous territory. Jordan B. Peterson, and Dr. Bret Weinstein, have been labeled as transphobic, homophobic, bigoted, alt-right, and Nazis as a result of their videos posted to YouTube over the past year voicing their objections to the current topic. This is not due to their true beliefs or behaviors, but due to their astute, erudite critiques concerning laws being passed requiring someone to alter their language, and their refusal to use the newly created gender pronouns. The irony of being called such things like Nazi, is the same hate speech that many transgender, or gender-fluid individuals claim to feel in certain situations as a result of not being addressed using their preferred pronouns. People are not intrinsically entitled to constant feelings of pleasantry; an important first reason to consider concerning this issue, no matter how bitter the pill is to…show more content…
We should absolutely be collectively aiming towards equality of opportunity, but aiming towards equality of outcome can only create more problems for individuals, and society as a whole. The idea of equality of outcome breeds practices like the Bush era’s “no child left behind,” or giving out participation awards. Do initiatives like this impel us as a society or impede us? Hardly anyone is having this discussion these days because participants in objective, logical communication about the possibility of eliminating these, and other attempts at the unrealistic mass-equalization of gender, capability, or societal roles are slandered and dehumanized
