Do films offer anything more than an escape from reality?

The issue if films do offer anything more than an escape from reality has been an arguable issue since the prevalence and popularity of films in recent years. Some feel that films are only able to give us an escapade from our mundane everyday lives while others beg to differ. Films do offer us a lot more than an escape from reality, however, this is dependent on the genre of the film as with the extensive array of films in the world today, some films present to us real world problems while others feed on the imagination of viewers.
Films have been regarded by many as an avenue to escape the duties and responsibilities in their everyday lives. It helps us explore the world of fantasy …show more content…

Example of such films include The Day After Tomorrow and the film Supersize Me, both of which examines real world issues and problems today. The Day After Tomorrow looks at the realities of Global Warming and how it leads to catastrophes while Supersize Me looks at the unyielding and persisting problem of excessive fast food consumption in the world of today where fast food chains are growing at exponential rates. Both films closely examine the implications and effects of our real world living environment, presenting to us different insights on how we can better assuage the problems we are facing today. Though fictional films can most a time, present to us a mere temporal escape, but the wide array of genres of films offer us insights to the real world, increasing awareness and diversifies economies. The usage of ‘anything more’ signifies that the possible contribution of a film is limited in scope when in fact, films can offer us much more. In conclusion, I feel that films can both function as an escape from reality and something more than that as in the globalising world of today with the free transmission of knowledge and ideas, the many different genres of films are increasing exponentially and freely, all of which serves different purposes and functions to
