There were approximately 14.1 million new cases of cancer diagnosed last 2012 which are expected to rise by about 70% over the next two decades. The top five cancers among men include lung, prostrate, colorectum, stomach and liver cancer. On the other hand, breast, colorectum, lung, cervix and stomach cancer are among the most common sites of cancer for women (De Martel, et.al, 2012). Furthermore, the WHO (World Health Organization) emphasized that cancer is now the leading cause of death worldwide accounting for 8.2 million deaths in 2012. Most of which is caused by lung cancer with almost a fifth of its incidence (1.59 million deaths).
Locally, the Philippine Cancer Society showed a predicted number of new cases of cancer on 2010 which is about 82,468. 36,012 of which are males and 43,456 are females. There are approximately 51,808 deaths in the Philippines due to cancer. Examples of carcinogens enumerated by the Philippine Cancer Society to be the initiating factor for cancer include cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, hormones such as estrogen, chronic infection brought about by certain viruses, obesity, radiation and ultraviolet rays from the sun. Nutrients, energy and oxygen are being supplied to the tumor cells by the formation of new blood vessels. As more number of new blood vessels is formed, tumor cells grow and divide and form larger tumors. At the same time, certain chemicals that induce the formation of angiogenesis are being released.
