Cheating has become a serious issue in our society. I feel that this must be a topic of discussion, so that students can know that cheating is a very bad decision which will lead to life-long consequences. Some people use cheat sheets, electronic devices, or will even write on themselves, which could cause ink-poisoning. I feel that people should be aware of their actions and take in to consideration who might be looking.
A person that takes short-cuts in life, or tries to take the easy way out, is not a hard worker. No one wants to hire anyone that is untrustworthy. A new survey by McAfee found that one-third of high school students admit to using cell phones or other devices to cheat in school. Everyone has the capability to do the work, but some students might feel pressured by their families to keep their grades up. Some students start to feel overwhelmed because of all the work and decide to cheat, even though they know it’s wrong. Many students have academic scholarships, and if they can’t keep their grades up, they know that they could possibly lose their scholarships. I strongly encourage students to manage their time productively and to surround themselves with positive people owing to the fact that if one gets associated with the wrong crowd he or she will be more likely to cheat.
Cheating also shows a person’s true ethics. The 2012 Josephson Report Card on the Ethics of American Youth reveals a pressing need to integrate elements of character education into the country’s public-school curriculums. According to the study, 57 percent of teens stated that successful people do what they have to do to win, even if it involves cheating. The nature of cheating originates from the common misconception of helping others and a student’s lack of self-confidence. Plagiarism, not so different from cheating, disperses from the broad range of information on today’s technology. Through an authentic study, it has been revealed that teachers have established many students who have cheated their way through complexed assignments. Even misleading students who have kept a high grade point average has been found as participants of academic dishonesty. Today, professors seek to find different measures that should be taken to decrease cheating and plagiarism.
An honor code can be so effective that “many schools with academic honor codes allow students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control cheating” (Source F). Despite this system, there is research that “indicates that the significantly lower levels cheating” (Source F) at schools with honor codes. This is possible because there is a peer culture that denounces cheating, making kids embarrassed to commit academic dishonesty. Such a peer culture was formed by educating the students about the value of academic dishonesty.
Cheating is nothing new to society. It has been seen over the years in schools and in life. Today, however, the cheating epidemic is out of control. In an essay written by Richard Perez-penasept, he shows us the facts of how cheating is out of control, and how a new set of rules on how to deal with cheating might be necessary. New competitive mindsets, easier access to online sources, and lack of integrity are reasons why schools should have more strict penalties against cheaters.
With consistent discussions and reminders of the consequences of cheating, it would become clearer to students both the repercussions of academic dishonesty, but also set an important social precedent around cheating. This article on ethics was really interesting and a dilemma that is prevalent within criminal justice. In the article Dr. Steven Davis recognized that students cheating in high school increased by 20% in the 1940 to 75% today. Davis stated, "If students lack ethics in high school and college, then there should be little surprise that they lack ethics in their careers. (2008). " This observation by Davis holds some value, because individuals that is willing to cheat to get ahead, definitely has no problem crossing ethical lines, because in their mind the wrong is acceptable, just as it was when they cheated.
Rubinkam’s Texting in Class is Rampant explains how most highschool and college students use their phones during class and lectures. Rubinkam reports that , “The anonymous survey of 269 Wilkes students found that nine in 10 admit to sending text messages during class-and nearly half say it's easy to do so undetected. Even more troubling, 10 percent say that they have sent or received texts during exams and 3 percent admit to using their phones to cheat.” Rubinkam uses logos to show how many students use their phones during class. The amount of students that do is frightening to most teachers because most teachers do not even notice it.
In today’s society schools hold their honor codes high in the air as a sign that their school has a policy against cheating. Yet, that has not fixed the problem. In our technological society answers to quizzes, worksheets, and essays can be accessed and shared in a second. Honor codes have not fixed the problem, but they haven’t worsened it. At Cedaredge High School we do not have a written honor code.
Cheating in school and sports are considered very unethical and controversial. The articles explain the downside, and the negative effects of cheating. The sources used for credible information are from an Associate Dean of Education at the University of Florida and a professor at Arizona State University. The sources helped formulate the opinion that cheating educational and sports wise is unacceptable.
“If I cheat and don’t get caught, the reward is an ‘A’ in the class”. Cheating is a getaway for everyone beginning from high school to college up to graduate and professional schools. Which leads to students participating to an academic dishonesty, a violation to any educational environment with any form of cheating or participating of any kind of sharing information to others for homework, tests, and papers. The general population wants to get the best out of someone but what happens when circumstances do not allow for success. We are taught the difference between the right and wrong since our childhood but are always told that the lying and cheating always makes things difficult but when students go to school and college they are faced with different dilemma as then the cheating seems to be the easier way to get good grades.
