I am a confident person who is 15 years old and quite different but is not afraid of what people say about me. I'm not afraid to speak up if something is wrong and have pretty strong opinions about things. I like to be alone and walk in the forest and yet is quite happy in other people. I like country life. And is not afraid to either kill or trample around in shit. I like to work, both physically and theoretically. I do not know yet what I want to be but want to work in a well-paying job and have some animals at my farm I live on. I think I have become the person I am today because I have been very much in the forests but also lived in smaller town. I lived in Ulricehamn when I was younger. But we moved out to the small village calls Böne when I was 12 years old. I had been out in Böne large parts of my life before. My cousins live and lived there. I hang out with people who like winter sports, and I had been practicing cross-country skiing, and …show more content…
In the cities, it is close to much. For example, jobs, friends, leisure. But I find it strange that I enjoy a lot better now that I live in the country than when I lived in Ulricehamn. Many say they want Swedish products meat milk etc. But if all are moving to the cities, there are not any animals or farms left, and then we have to import a lot of raw materials and products. And those people who want to live on the farm cannot because people refuse to pay more for Swedish organic meat and milk. If the milk cost 20 SEK per liter so more people would choose foreign. I think this is bad. There is a new study that looks that if we did all the cheese in Sweden and Swedish milk so it would take very many more dairy farms in Sweden. It's sick that we blame the cows when the environment becomes poor. Yet so we import milk from Germany and Denmark. Wonder what it's like destroying the environment then. Transports and not
Pollan claimed, “After a few weeks rest, the pasture will regrow and feed the cows again”. (171) This demonstrates that farmers don’t feed food that animals aren’t recognizable to at local sustainable companies. Ultimately every food chain has a unique process to raise their animals. But locally sustainable food chains have the best way to approach their food system because they do it in a procedure that will not harm the animals.
The U.S. agricultural industry can now produce unlimited quantities of meat and grains at remarkably cheap prices. But it does so at a high cost to the environment, animals and humans”
The article was written in response to the statement farming and food production is leading to climate change. Niman, being a rancher who raises cattle, goats, and turkeys, effectively frames the situation logically by providing credible statistics and examples to help the reader better understand the impacts of different methods of food production. She does this by providing specific information regarding the greenhouse gases involved, being carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxides. Niman, the rhetor, has written this article to try and inform the readers about the differences between traditional style and industrial style methods of food production. She has directed the article towards those concerned about the carbon footprint, we as individuals, are leaving
Theme Analysis of “Good Country People” As we look forward in our literature adventure, we focus our efforts towards the “theme “of the story that we are reading. First, we need to gain a clear understanding of the meaning of theme. As provided in our textbook, “theme is the central idea or meaning of a story” (Meyers 242). Now that we have received the definition, we can begin to dissect a story from our reading of the week.
Since the formation of organized civilization, men have used religious information to control women. From forcing them to dress a particular way to being in control of the level of education that women receive, male spiritual figureheads made every effort to keep women from reaching their full potential. In both short stories, the female protagonist is manipulated by a “religious” male antagonist, impersonating how religion victimizes women. “Good Country People” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” depict two separate but similar tales. Each story describes the horrendous ending of women, that leaves the women physically and mentally damaged.
“The Good Country People”: An Ironic Title Flannery O’Connor’s short story "The Good Country People” develops the theme that some people who profess to be christians are actually hypocrites. This short story, published in 1955, tells the story of a unique female character named Hulga Hopewell. The story is separated into four distinct sections to help emphasize the relationship of the characters. Also, the story employs literary devices such as symbolism, imagery, and allegory. However, certain critics contend that O 'Connor might have an intently parodied herself in the person of Joy/Hulga.
Kentucky, a state known for its agriculture, its enormous contribution toward U.S. coal production, the site of the U.S.military bases such as Fort Knox and Fort Campbell, as well as the home of the celebrated Kentucky Derby, bluegrass music, and true southern hospitality; however, this mighty state may be filled with riches beyond ones comprehension, yet its people lived and still live in poverty-something that has continued since it became a distinct part of the United States. -http://www.history.com/topics/us-states/kentucky “It is often steeped in mythic lore and stereotyped as backward, uncultured and poor." -http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5386355 Appalachia ’s remote wilderness lured many.
After watching this video where Michael Moss speaks about Salt, Sugar, and Fat in the American diet, my views about the food industry have changed. I never realized that the government was supporting the dairy industry. It amazed me to learn that the reason Americans are so attached to their dairy products is due to the strong relationship of the government and the dairy industry. Personally, I really enjoy dairy products.
We were asked to read two articles one was “On Buying Local” by Katherine Spriggs and the other was “What’s Eating America” by Michael Pollan. In the article “On Buying Local,” Spriggs showed a great use of logos when she stated that it was better for us to buy locally because it was better for the environment. Spriggs gives us several reasons why we should give up “a little bit of convenience” in favor of helping the environment. Farmers wouldn’t have to lose their farms to larger farms, smaller farms could be more sustainable by using natural and local resources, and there would be fewer emissions. This idea has been meeting with some opposition people worry of economic damage, but Spriggs has shown the argument and counterarguments with the proof of how the argument is flawed.
In Henry David Thoreau memoir, Walden , chapter two, Where I Lived, and What I Lived For ,Thoreau explains why, “ I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life.” Thoreau uses the appeal of pathos to display to the audience his declaration of living simplistic all the way cut down to the necessities with figurative language and syntactical choices. Thoreau breaks down this chapter into two sections where he lived and what he lives for, as the name of the chapters. In Where I Lived, starting off on the first line, “AT A CERTAIN season of our life we are accustomed to consider every spot as the possible site of a house, ” Thoreau uses a paradox, and irony, to state when one is looking for a house, one considers every possible land space to build/buy a house; now it might not seem true, but when you’re looking for a place to live, one does take into account every available property. Ironically, Thoreau himself, is looking for a house and has, “...surveyed the country on every side within a dozen miles.”
Flannery O’Conner uses the story “Good Country People” to show the reader, the many ways in which people can deceive each other and even themselves. O’Connor is religious in life and she uses religion to show the reader that even the most devoted can trick you. She also uses the names of the characters, to convey a whole other meaning. The author herself undercuts the characters to show the reader, how the character’s view on the world is wrong. It essentially makes the reader themselves question what they know and think about the world.
This documentary unfairly stated that cattle is the sole factor of our world’s environmental issues because they emit greenhouse gases and over-consume water. However, in reality they are not the only ones who are using water, creating greenhouse gas, and affecting the land and ocean. Our planet is facing a lack of water, and according to the documentary, the cows are one of the major causes of this. If the problem is water waste, then look at how we, the people, are using it. Almost everybody uses water to shower, wash dishes, and flush toilets everyday.
I want to be a person that happily stays the whole day trying to understand peoples’ thoughts to assistance them in life. I want to be, nothing more, nothing less than a
Cowboy Culture’s Impact On Modern Society Cowboys have perpetually been an iconic feature of the ‘Wild West’ since the 19th century; Henceforth, this has been a national image as the conqueror of wilderness, savagery, and villainy. These symbols of the West have developed diversity during the shift from the 1800s to the 1900s. This culture of “individualism clashes with the concept of community and ‘struggle… [, leaving] success [to be] wrought from sacrifice´(Rushing, 19)” (“MWF 9 - Cowboy Culture”, April 9, 2010).
