“Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” Og Mandino, an American author, believed that determination was what helped people to succeed in life. Determination is not just important in the area of work, but also simple things like keeping a healthy diet, getting to school on time, or even spending time with God every day. The Cambridge dictionary defines determination as, “the ability to continue trying to do something, although it is very difficult.” Determination helps people to push through and complete their tasks when they are faced with a challenge as big as a mountain. Firstly, failure does not mean that the person stupid, it just means that you need more time. I was required to take a national exam when I was 12. Being someone who viewed exams as a huge rock in the middle of the road, I had many concerns. To make matters worst, what I was being tested on was following the British system. However, I had been studying using the American system since young. I was very worried that I would mix the two up and that would result in failure of that exam. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. That was the quote that my friend told me when I told her of my situation. When you try, you have a 50% chance of scoring. Because I had faith in God, I cleared the exam, not with an excellent score, but with a decent score. A year later, I had another exam. This was the theory exam for music. Unlike my older brother, I could not do theory very well. Doing the practical component was fine, but I found it extremely difficult to remember all the different terms. Despite the fact that I was not good in theory, I went ahead with the exam. I trusted God and gave my best. By God’s grace, I am now teaching three students music theory. Failure is not only something that happens to the weak. Failure is a natural part of learning, it is the attitude after we fail that makes the difference.
