"I want other Japanese to have the best opportunities to learn English so they can improve their skills and life."
- Natsuko Hiraoka
My name is Natsuko Hiraoka. I am a mother, and I live in Cebu City in the Philippines with my son, Seiya. I used to be a reporter in Japan, but now I own a preschool in Okayama. Let me tell you a little about Cebu Kids Paradise.
A Short History
After I finished my university education in Japan, I lived and worked in America. While living there, I had great difficulty communicating because my English skills were very poor. Even if I studied how to read and write in English for 6 years in middle school and high school back in Japan, my ability to speak the language was very limited. But as I stayed longer in the U.S., I had to use English to communicate everyday, so my skills improved over time.
However, this made me realize that

Through them, I learned about the beautiful island of Cebu and I observed that they could talk very well in English. I decided to travel to Cebu with my son.
During our trip to Cebu, we learned that the city is well developed and living here is pleasantly affordable. It is a modern city, but it is also surrounded by plenty of beautiful beaches and other natural wonders that are truly like paradise. Plus, Cebuanos are friendly and can speak English well. Most importantly, there are so many good schools for Japanese to learn English in Cebu.
Eventually, we moved to Cebu and I found a great school here for my son. Since then, Seiya’s English skills have greatly improved and he has made a lot of good friends. He is really enjoying his classes and is even learning Tagalog and Cebuano! I am very happy and satisfied with his progress. We have also met other Japanese who are living and studying in Cebu, and they have also shared how helpful the experience has been for them to improve their English.

Here in the U.S, it is very challenging for me in term of language because English is not my primary language. Ronold Takaki was luckier than me even he is also an Asian American,
AVID is a program not intended for everyone. This program exposes you to a variety of skills and mastery for adolescents desiring to attend college. Avid focuses around organization, teamwork, and for you to critically think. These skills are new to many and are provenly beneficial, however these skills do not favor those that have already had these skills and are show casing their full potential. Therefore, Avid is not for me since it interferes with my academic courses, mastery of avid skills and would not be beneficial for me because I have gained much of the skills and would rather interfer than assist.
This has been my biggest accomplishment. Despite the obstacles against me, I have been able to learn a new language and perform well academically in comparison to students who are natives. My
Imagine what it is like to be seven years old moving to a country where you don’t know anyone, you don’t understand the language, and everything seems foreign. When I first arrived to the United States, I didn’t have friends due to my inability to speak English. It wasn’t an easy journey, but my determination to achieve the American Dream gave me strength to keep going. I decided to take English courses during my free time, and now I am a great writer who is fluent in both English and Spanish.
.On any given day there will be a group of students working on their associates degrees that have been there long before I started to attend Wayne County Community College. They are a little older than I am, most being around the age of 23. They spend their time playing video games while I stand mind going to class. I consider this group to be friends but I am scared this is what my future will be like if I remain at this institution.
English 102 through the Alabama Early College Program has taught me the importance of writing skills. When I first began online classes for English, I quickly started learning techniques that I needed to keep up throughout the semester. Each assignment and essay is due at midnight, therefore starting or finishing an assignment early allows the writer enough time to turn in the assignment. Throughout the five modules, I have learned how to write an argument and rhetorical analysis, conduct research and write an exploratory essay. In each module, I learned writing techniques and skills that I never knew before.
I have grown as an academic student in college and career readiness, as displayed through my English 101 class. This was my third college class on the campus of Los Angeles Mission College, so I thought I was prepared and ready. Yet in my English 101 class I had to come up with my own prompts for my essays and merely came into class to listen to lectures on the basics of English. This was the first class that the teacher did not give me the rules on what to do for the assignment, I had to come up with it myself. Professor Diaz-Cooper did not hand out How-To papers or grading rubrics - she expected us to know and acquire all this information on our own.
My eyes automatically drifted to the tall bright palm tree that moved along with the rhythm of the wind. It’s leafs danced as they presented their welcome. The sun shined down and hugged me with warmth, giving my skin a tingling, but satisfying sensation. I had come from Virginia to California, the famous, constantly spoken of state, that finally reached my sight. The state presented its beautiful attributes to capture my wonder and mesmerization.
As a child it was hard for me to learn two languages at once, but it was essential to break the communication barrier. By the age of three I spoke proficient
“Do you even speak English,” a gringo asked me. “No, yo no hablo ingles”, 13-year old me responded. I am from the Dominican Republic and I have been living in the United States for four years. When I came to the States, I was only 13 years old. My journey was definitely not an easy one.
She thinks if you are in America you should be speaking English and if students are learning another language in school it takes time away from other curriculum. During the San Francisco School Board meeting, many people shared their thoughts having all San Francisco public schools students become bilingual. Dr. Ling-chi Wang, a scholar and activist, shared that knowing a second language stimulates and enhances learning in other subjects. Another man mentioned how only knowing English places limits on his job (ie. business). The business industry can be worldwide and not knowing a second language can create obstacles for people to do

About four years ago I arrived at Logan airport, Boston Massachusetts. Once the plane landed I felt excited to explore a new country that looked beautiful from the planes window, but I was also confused because everything was different from home and I had no idea where to go. Although I thought that was the hard part, there was way more obstacles coming my way such as language and culture among others which I had to learn fast. Being in a foreign country and without its main language can be pretty though.
First of all, my experience of learning English was a great process which took fifteen years as a Turkish native speaker. When I was seven years old, I started to learn English and I am able to learn languages. When I was five years old, I was watching cartoons in English and in my opinion it was so helpful for me to learning a new language. I have been learning English for fifteen years including my college life. I studied American Culture and Literature in Bilkent University.
