Nowadays, in the era of globalization, foreign language is becoming more and more important to stay in the skyrocket competition but many people feel a lot of difficulties in learning that language because they don’t follow an appropriate method of learning the language. They try to take shortcuts, which results failure in the end. Learning a foreign language is an art where a student need to practice reading, writing, speaking and listening appropriately. The essay will further elaborate the practice details in depth.
Starting with the most important topic reading, where a lot of people feel resistance while facing that, firstly, one should follow up the techniques which he/ she was using in his/ her mother language. For example, “skim a particular passage to understand the gist of the passage” (Richards O., 2016, para 3). This technique will not only saves time for the person but also give him/her a proper understanding of the plot of the story. The second thing which should be taken into consideration is a student should start from the very beginning and read till the end (Richards, 2016). Both are the essential parts for learning a foreign language. Both listening and speaking are linked to each other. If a student wants to be a good speaker, he needs to be a good listener first. There are certain ways to improve these skills like keep on reading a lot of things in that language because “when we read in a foreign language, we usually subvocalize, in other words, we make the sounds in our heads, which helps to improve listening”(Kaufmann, 2017, para 4).
