CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF HAVING HOUSEMAIDS IN THE UAE Nowadays, housemaids raise over 94% of United Arab Emirate’s children, the maids taking care of the children is a common phenomena these days. It results to the children being raised by housemaids which is considered inappropriate due to some reasons. According to Dubai Women’s Establishment as stated in the article “94% of Dubai children reared by nannies” (Dhal, 2011). It was discovered after observing a number of workingwomen that housemaids raise 62% of children under the age of four. May be the presence of the maids at home becomes necessary in order to have a stress-free life and good care for the children. These days, parents are so busy with daily activities because of there basic needs. Parents need to work in order to support each other, so some parents get so busy with there work and daily activities which makes having housemaids in the house to take care of the children necessary. Also, parents barely have time to raise their children. For example: they spend one-third of the day at work and some time to take care of their needs, so they end up not having enough time to take good care of the children. Furthermore, having housemaids becomes very important in helping the parents because it is known that the children are anarchists and they have a lot of energy to play which needs careful supervision of someone matured. In most cases maids are not literates, so they do things the way they think is correct which may be inappropriate. Children being fast learners tend to learn whatever they see from those maids, very easily. It will be very easy because the children in most cases spend more time with housemaids than with their own parents. The maids serve as the children’s first teacher. Therefore, whatever they teach the children will be with them for a long period of time. They will grow with it. The few parents that raise their children always engage them in activities that will enhance there learning skills, help them with school work and even teach them some new things. Barely will a maid teach a child all these, except in some few cases. The children learn whatever they see from the maid, good or bad. And it becomes their discipline and background.
