Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1 Basics of Lung Cancer:
Lung cancer is that the leading reason behind cancer death within the us. Early detection and treatment of carcinoma is very important so as to enhance the 5 year survival rate of cancer patients. For traditional person, cells within the lungs divide and reproduce at a controlled rate to repair worn-out or skinned tissues and permit for growth. Cancerous Nodule develops once cells within the lungs multiply at associate uncontrollable rate. These tissue lots are known as tumors. Tumors are either non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant).
Two sorts of Tumors?
Benign tumors don't seem to be cancer. they'll usually be removed and in most cases the tumors don't unfold to different elements

Over time the damaged cells may become cancerous.
Cigars, pipes and cigarettes: the best way to prevent lung cancer is to quit or never start smoking.
Environmental Tobacco smoke: more commonly known as second hand smoke.
Lung diseases: certain lung diseases such as tuberculosis increase a person’s chance of getting lung cancer
Pollution: air pollutants such as the by-products of the combustion of diesel and other fossil fuels.
Facts about Lung Cancer:
More than one hundred fifty thousand Americans died from carcinoma in 2005.
Only 12-15 % of lung cancer patients are cured with today’s treatments.
More than ninety percent of lung cancers are preventable.
87% of lung cancer deaths are due to Cigarette Smoking. 90% in men and 79% in women.
Because respiratory organ tissue is soft and spongy, tumors typically grow to advanced stages before inflicting discomfort. As carcinoma is sometimes diagnosed in a very late stage, it's usually already undergone metastasis. Malignant tumors unfold to different areas of the body and destroy traditional tissue. {lung willcer|carcinoma} can metastasise and unfold to different organs within the body typically into the brain, bone marrow, and
Causes of Cancer in Firefighters As I began my career in the fire service the thought of cancer never crossed my mind. As you wear all of your personnel protective equipment you feel bullet proof. Your equipment is designed to protect and keep me safe which it does, but our complacency is our down fall. When we respond to an incident a fire for example the biggest product of fire is smoke.
During the first decades of the 20th century, lung cancer and other
Some of the early signs and symptoms of lung cancer are a persistent cough, shortness of breath, bloody sputum, loss of appetite, and unintentional weight loss. Recognizing these signs and symptoms gives a better chance for diagnosing lung cancer at an early stage when the treatment is more effective than in later stages (Ohio Department of Health, 2010). Sometimes it is harder to recognize the sign and symptoms in smokers than non-smokers due to already having chronic coughing or hoarseness due to smoking. Having regular follow-up with a physician may help to diagnose the lung disease or lung cancer at an early
It is more than one tumor, hundreds of tumors because researchers have seen that many types of cancer in the world. Some say cancer could possibly have many diseases rolled up into one big disease, but really it could not have been rolled up. Once you have this disease it is difficult to dry away because you have to go through a bunch of treatments for your specific type of cancer patients were diagnosed with. If doctors do not find out about someone having cancer, it can cause the cancer to go into uncontrollable growth (Gorski). Many people die in a year, from cancer.
Illness as Metaphor Illness at a Metaphor by Susan Sontag discusses how metaphors complicate diseases or syndromes of multiple or unknown causes. Sontag says that the most truthful way to describe illnesses is without any influence of metaphors, to keep it as pure and scientific as possible (Sontag 3). However, metaphors are a part of everyday life and it is nearly impossible to escape the use of metaphors to describe illnesses.
Cancer Research Project By: Kelly Reese Cancer is the disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body. Cancer has affected 13.7 million people since 2012. It affects people and animals in different ways. This disease makes people ill and can even cause death. Even though the cells are in everyone’s bodies you may never become sick with this disease.
What’s your thought on tanning? Do you think tanning in a salon isn’t harmful? Do you think tanning outside is more harmful. Tanning indoors or even tanning outdoors is very harmful to you. With outdoor tanning you can prevent the intake of UVB and UVA rays by properly using sunblock but in tanning beds you cannot.
Bone cancer isn’t a very common cancer. It accounts for much less than one percent of all cancers. Around 2,300 cases of bone cancer are diagnosed each year. Bone cancer is a serious disease that has multiple different types and treatments.
They also vary on how severe they can be. A common disease of the respiratory system is the common cold. If a person smokes, they are at a higher chance to get emphysema, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Pulmonary emphysema occurs when the alveolar walls become thinner and weaker. Destruction of the alveolar capillaries also occurs.
Cancer is perhaps the scariest word in the 21st century. Everyone has had a family member or know someone who battled cancer. Sadly, many say they would rather be murdered than diagnosed with cancer, this is a very slow and painful disease. “cancer is the result of cumulative mutations that alter specific locations in a cell’s DNA” (Gibbs, 2008). Cancer development odds are related to food, environment, and heredity.
Cancer is an abnormal production of cells that divide uncontrollably within the body (Black & Hogan 2006). What is more vaguely understood are the mechanisms the underlie this, the different effects on each patient, and how to stop it. Some common types of cancer are breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, leukemia, and brain cancer. Each of these various diagnoses cause different biological and psychological stresses on the patient. Because old cells do not die and instead grow out of control, often, a mass will form, otherwise known as a tumor.
Cancer is a term reserved for malignant tumors. Malignant tumors are composed of the growing, abnormal
Worldwide, tobacco use causes about 90% of lung cancer deaths, 30% of all cancers, 20-25% of coronary heart diseases and stroke deaths, and more than 80% of chronic bronchitis and emphysema”. (Jordan 1). Secondly not only does it affect smokers but even people who don 't even partake in the activity of smoking cigarettes. Second hand smoke is a serious issue and can cause cancer almost easy as being an actual smoker can.
Cancer is a sickness; it is also referred to as malignancy. There are more than one hundred types of cancer. One cause is damaged or faulty genes. Our genes are what instruct our cells on what to do. Genes are encoded with DNA, and anything that harms or affects our DNA can increase the risk of cancer.
YOU Smoking causes many harmful diseases and health problems. They are as follows: 1) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease 2) Stains teeth and causes Oral cancer 3) Lung cancer 4) Causes artery blockage 5) Makes our bone brittle 6) Weaker immune system 7) Buerger’s Disease.
