Nutmeg comes from the tree species Myristica fragrus that is indigenous to the Banda Islands in the Moluccas, which is also known as the Spice Islands. It is also cultivated on Penang Island in Malaysia, in the Caribbean – specifically in Grenada – and in the southern Indian state Kerala.
Nutmeg is most commonly known as a ground spice; but is also the seed of the tree. It is egg-shaped, 20-30 mm long and 15-18 mm wide. It has a red plastic-like covering called mace, which is also used as a separate spice. It is an evergreen tree. Trees can be harvested 7-9 years after planting and they reach full production after 20 years.

It has been reported that nutmeg has been used (for its intoxicating effect) by students, marijuana smokers, prisoners, alcoholics and sailors in documents of Richard Evans Schulte and Albert Hofmann. Additionally it has been used as a medicine for infants in India. Also, it was an ingredient in Dutch ciders and wines, and sprinkled over drinks in the Caribbean. The pod of the nutmeg seed was and is also used to make jam and crystallised candy.
Folklore
Nutmeg is one of the spices traditionally used in Jewish rituals concerning the farewell to the feminine aspect of God on Saturdays. Whole nutmegs have also been used as Jovian good luck charms; especially when it has purple thread wrapped around it.
According to the Creole folklore during the 19th century sprinkling nutmeg into the left shoe of a woman acts as an aphrodisiac and can make her fall in love with the man
The Cherokee people used plants for medicinal use. In fact, some plants had more than one use. Take the Qua lo ga, or common Sumac, for example. This plant can be made into a tea that helps to reduce fevers, or can be a decoction, which is the liquor resulting from concentrating the essence of a substance by heating or boiling. Common Sumac decoction can be gargled for sore throats and diarrhea.

In the Odyssey there were lotus eaters that lived on an island and they ate the plant lotus (lotus is a fruit). The lotus eaters would influence anyone that came to the island to eat the lotus. The lotus was a narcotic fruit so it made you sleep peacefully and feel good. So the people would keep eating it and they would want to stay on the island to have it.

As people say South Asia main course of food is rice so they think it originates from there but no it was bought there because rice can grow in the wetlands deltas of South Asia. (Thomas) As for cinnamon it comes from a dried bark from laurel tree but the original one comes from zeylanicum tree but now that were modern they get it from cassia tree. It was token over the English and then it cultivated too many different places in the tropical areas of the world.

I’m almost certain that everyone in the United States at one point of time has had this Old Spice commercial stuck on replay in their head.
