Another problem with online dating is the possibility of lying and deception due to the freedom given by the internet. In the survey, twenty-two (22) people said that the possibility of lying and deception is indeed, one of the biggest problems of online dating. This is because the possibility of deception is what the respondents fear about online dating and in fact, this is the reason they stated in the survey as to why they do not participate in online dating. “This (online romance scam) is a concern not solely because people are losing large sums of money to these criminals, but also because of the psychological impact experienced by victims of romance scams,” (Buchanan and Whitty, 182). In truth, the risk of deception in traditional dating but, in this case, it is easier to avoid because the two parties will meet each other face-to-face and will get to spend time together through their dates. In traditional dating, the two people will get to know each other and would see if their intentions for each other are clean, not like in online dating where they will not know who the person on the other side is. Furthermore, the two daters will learn to trust each other which would lessen the risk of lying and deception because of their dates and experiences together. Subsequently , the dangers that can be brought about by the exposure of personal information online can also be detrimental in creating intimate relationships. Based on the survey, eighteen (18) out of the twenty-five respondents said that it is dangerous to give out personal information online.
