C. When counseling recovering addicts, the most common issue that needs to be addressed is the breakdown of their family unit. Children that have a hard time coping with the divorce of their parents’ frequently turn to illicit drug use to avoid dealing with the heartbreak. 1. As discussed by Severin Haug in the BMC Public Health’s "Predictors of Onset of Cannabis and Other Drug Use in Male Young Adults: Results from a Longitudinal Study," 2015. The finding that parental divorce at an early age predicted the onset of cannabis use is in line with prior results showing that children who are exposed to family problems, including family disruption and conflict, are more likely to use drugs such as cannabis in both adolescence and young adulthood.
PROTECTIVE AND RISK FACTORS IN SMOKING CIGARETTES Adolescents are curious by nature. They like adventures and thrill. However, since they are exposed to a fast-paced world, sometimes they tend to make decisions that affect their future such as engaging in health-related risk factors like smoking, drinking, drug abuse, and early exposure to sexual acts. According to the evidence gathered by World Health Organization (WHO), there is an increasing population of people who are using drugs, drinking alcohol, and smoking cigarettes, particularly among developing countries and adolescents. Given below are some of the risk factors why people, usually adolescents smoke and what are some of the protective factors: RISK FACTORS PROTECTIVE FACTORS Biological Factors Parents, especially mother should avoid smoking while being pregnant; Parents should set as role models for not smoking Mental Reasons (stress, depression, anxiety) Stress and time management; Worthwhile activities to reduce stress like sports Social Pressure Be firm in resisting the invitation to smoke Weight Gain Exercise and proper diet Peer Pressure Wise choice of friends Social media and physical environment Continuous reminder of the dangerous effects of smoking Reasons for Smoking Cigarettes The risk factors stated above are most likely the reasons why people smoke, particularly adolescents or young adults.
In addition, most smokers begin smoking when they are in their teens. About 25 percent of all adolescents who experiment with cigarette-smoking become regular smokers, and among the smokers, about one-third will die from a smoking-related health disease (Global Youth Tobacco Survey Collaborative Group, 2002; Brand, et al, 2006; Kaur and Bains, 2006; Tonstad, 2006; Mathers and Loncar, 2006). In other words, the estimated risk of developing a smoking-related disease among smokers who started the habit early in life is twice higher compared to those who started smoking at a later age. Smoking among teens is associated with additional health and social problems. Smoking affects the physical growth and activities of teenagers.
Can you believe that 90 percent of smokers begin smoking before they reach the age of 21? That is the youth of this generation smoking even before they have become mature adults. Smoking is a common problem, and it causes devastating effects. These effects will ruin their life. Not only do adults smoke, but because of their bad influence, young adolescents have started smoking.
They understand that the people around them are doing it and chose to influence them in the same manner. The tobacco industry understands that “culture is learned from parents and peers”, they count on that to be a driving force in young adults buying their products, Hair, J. F., Lamb, C. W., & McDaniel, C. (2016, p. 101). These strategies no matter how unethical are continuously used to influence youth. From the Tobacco Company Quotes on Marketing to Kids, "It is important to know as much as possible about teenage smoking patterns and attitudes. Today's teenager is tomorrow's potential regular customer and the overwhelming majority of smokers first begin to smoke while in their teens”, (2018).
Advertisers use emotions to evoke feelings in consumers in order to sell products. One of the main emotions advertisers use is fair. Public service announcements tries to invoke fear in people to promote a change of behavior and lifestyle. One of the current social causes that the public are fighting against is smoking. According to the Truth Initiation in 2003 23% of teens smoked cigarettes and now in 2017, only 6% of teens smoke cigarettes.
this research provides substantial evidence that smoking among friends predicts adolescent future smoking, but modest evidence that general prevalence, for example, within a particular grade or school, predicts future smoking, with the exception though, of cases where a higher general prevalence of smoking among senior students is related to an increase in smoking among lower-grade students (leatherdale, cameron, brown, jolin kroeker, 2006). however, while this literature bettered our understanding of peer influence on adolescent smoking, it does not address how peer group influences actually work. friends appear to provide the greatest peer influence on adolescent smoking; peer groups (close friends) provide independent influence, but their
Drug Use among Teens In the late 90s drug use had spread throughout the continents, mostly in developed countries. At first those drugs were specified to cure diseases or to overcome the pain of certain situations like medical surgeries. Nowadays those drugs are used by teenagers to reach a certain level of comfort that make them not realizing what’s going on around them nor tending to react as a normal person. Drug use among teenagers had varied in the difference of cultures and the way of living, as for some cultures drugs is not allowed due to religion so teens want to try it so they can know the reason that made drugs prohibited, therefore they get addicted to it and it becomes a habit to use drugs. These drugs had caused a lot of disturbance
