Every second year, hearts and bets are up for one of the most competitive international sports gathering held in celebration of global unity. Whether it’s the Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics, there’s always a sense of zeal and political peace during the two superb weeks.This year’s Winter Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, beginning on February 9th and closing on February 25th. There are many negative opinions on having the Olympics in South Korea, when in fact there are many benefits. Every country, whether first, second or third world deserves a chance to shine and show the world their wonderous home and we have no right to stop that. South Korea is a beautiful country with creative people and having the Olympics in a poorer region like Pyeongchang will bring awareness to less fortunate regions around the world and their full potential. Having the Olympics in South Korea is a great opportunity to bring the two feuding countries together. In 1945, Korea was divided into two distinct countries: North Korea and South Korea, ending the Empire of Japan’s rule. The United States and the Soviet Union occupied each of the countries, USA in the South and The Soviets in the North. The tension between North and South Korea has not yet left it’s people and there is constant hostility towards each other. But on January 9th, North Korea agreed in negotiation with South Korea to send its qualified athletes to the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The Korean War was a proxy war fought between the United States and the USSR, for the purpose of gaining power and political influence in other parts of the world. The method in which the olympics affects the world differs in the various sources, with some speaking on progress in political relations, some speaking on progress socially, and finally others arguing it affects the world as a place for hostile countries to prove their worth to each other competitively. The documents about political progress are documents 1, 5, 6, and 7. The first, document 1, speaks very specifically on one who believes that the olympics will decrease tension between countries.
South Korea didn’t want to be a contribution to communism, where North Korea believed that communism was the solution to all problems. This invasion caused and all out war the involved many other countries like Russia and the US. As stated in “Document C”, Russia’s job was to help North Korea and promote their communists government, where the US was there to help South Korea promote their capitalism. Several years after continuously fighting on whether Korea should have a communist or capitalists government, the war finally ended. The country is still divided today and North Korea still remains communists leaving the US failing to stop communism.
According to Doc 4 multiple corporations invested in the South Korean olympics which are said to make a massive sum of money because of said investments. One other part of the Document is that it states that the economical standpoint of the olympics is completely neutral. Many businesses ignore the politics of the countries and instead focus on gaining a profit. Another document that shows how the olympics changed is how the broadcasting rights in Doc 8 increase for every olympic game, showing the importance of the olympics rising every year.
