Two stories and two magical wishes. The Monkey’s Paw and the Story of an Hour share several similarities throughout the passage. In the beginning of each passage, the author creates a sense of mystery and curiosity for the readers. As each passage reveals the characters in the story, the reader begins to relate the characters role from each story and how they act towards the conflict in the text. These different events, conflicts, or plot in both stories connect with death and wishes. The message from the two passages are relatively the same based on the characters, events and plot. The main connections between the two articles are characters, theme, plot and authors point of view. The author of each story writes to entertain their audience. In the Monkeys Paw, the story starts off “Without, the night was cold and wet, but in the small parlor of Laburnum villa the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly”. This first sentence in the passage immediately makes the reader wonder about the setting and what’s going on. In other words, the author W.W. In The Monkeys Paw, Mrs. White used the magical object (monkey’s paw). One out of the three wishes granted using the monkeys paw was to have her son back. The outcome of this was pounding at the door, not knowing exactly who was behind the door. The Monkeys Paw is all about granting wishes and not expecting its outcome. This is comparable to The Story of an Hour because Mrs. Mallard wished to have her husband back in her life, but she didn’t expect the outcome of actually seeing her husband alive. The outcome of her hopes and wishes resulted in her life. Therefore, a message or theme can be drawn for both of the passages.
