Academic excellence of students has been the goal of most higher education institutions. It is because of the assumption that those who excel in their academic endeavors will soon become competent professionals, contributing to the advancement of their respective industries and of the societies they are part of. Therefore, colleges and universities in particular exert all efforts in instilling in their students the significance of academic excellence, thus, challenging them to strive for it. It could also be said that the pursuit of academic excellence must be within the framework of “academic integrity,” which “involves all acts upholding ethical values and maintaining a good moral character within the academic environ and context” (Resurreccion, 2012, p. 34). Furthermore, it is through academic integrity that the public maintains its confidence in the protocol of any investigative endeavour and results as well as in the quality of learning offered at various levels of education (Bretag, 2013). Common responses from Delvin and Gray’s interviews with their participants include statements such as, “So many assignments in 12 weeks,” “We’re bombarded with work,” and “Assignments all being due at the same time” (p. 9). Park (2003) on the other hand, cited “time management.” He explained that students tend to plagiarize so they can attend not only to their academic duties but also to other things related to their social life and family responsibilities. Professional environments such as jobs, school, or other organizations all share a common characteristic, each of which having their own sets of rules and regulations; among these could include something called an honor code, which is meant to be a promise to abide by certain rules, typically cheating in an academic setting. A lot of people want to believe that the honor code is taken seriously by at least most people, but the fact of the matter is that little to nothing is enforcing these “promises of honesty”. While many colleges implement honor codes as a means of ensuring academic integrity, it has proven to be ineffective and quite contradictory for a variety of reasons. The honor code is often viewed with disdain by students who see its purpose solely as another set of rules to dutifully abide by. Administrators see it as a way to prevent cheating as seen through Source F where it states, “a number of colleges have found effective ways to reduce cheating and plagiarism… many of these colleges employ academic honor codes to accomplish these objectives.” This philosophy itself demonstrates a major flaw in the major purpose behind the honor code. The purpose of implementing an honor code should not be to eliminate cheating through making examples out of, mainly through expulsion and suspension, those who act with academic dishonesty. The purpose of the honor code should be above all, to foster a community where values such as integrity, honesty and respect are held in the highest regard.

The impact of Excelsior Scholarship As a college bound New York student the Excelsior Scholarship would play an incredible impact on my life. This is a great New York free tuition program that was introduced by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Students who already live in New York and will be able to attend college full will be able to benefit from this generosity. However, although this is a wonderful opportunity some students who desperately need it will not be able make use of it. Let us think of students who work part time or full time, or for some other reason can only do part time studies.
As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).
People wonder what is so wrong with cheating or plagiarism. As long as they get the work done or pass the course. But do these students know the real consequences of cheating and plagiarism. Viewing different people aspect of this problem, this happens everywhere. In Brent Staples article “Cutting and Pasting: A senior thesis by (Insert Name)”, he is trying to get through to individuals so that they could stop doing this and the consequences.
As a college freshmen, there is no doubt that I still have a long ways to go in order to achieve my academic goals. And through this journey, I know that I will encounter highs and lows just as I experienced in the past, most notability in high school. I keenly remember instances around this time where I doubted my abilities when subjects like math was proving to be difficult, even when I was trying to put in effort to stay on track. I was struggling in math because I did not try to identify my weaknesses, and never tried to come up with solutions to fix my problems. Rather, I chose to give up on math and settle with a grade barely passing.
Every student wants to be successful. However, the success of students around them causes them to exert even more, and sometimes unnecessary, work on their classes. This includes binge studying for a test to be sure that they do better than the students in the class, or as mentioned by Zinsser, “writing ten-page papers to impress them [the professors]” when five-page essays were actually assigned (Zinsser). Because there are students that do this, others feel the need to add more writing to their essays in order to reach the levels of those students.

Being an outstanding teacher goes beyond acquiring the competence and knowledge to deliver rigorous academic instruction to a diverse group of students. Outstanding teachers possess a multitude of qualities making them unique and unforgettable to the children they serve. I believe that outstanding teachers are passionate, inspired, creative, compassionate, patient and understanding.
Introduction Academic Integrity is an essential component of third level education because it is the fundamental building block in which we derive our professional ethics and integrity from. It sets a pattern for life long integrity in all areas of life. Our job as students is to construct knowledge honestly and fairly. A culture of honesty earns a great deal of respect. Integrity is fundamental to everything we do in college, I don’t think we can have genuine learning without integrity.
Sometimes, we don’t give ourselves permission to be our true selves out of fear of what others may think or due to truly integrate the various parts of ourselves into one, complete whole person. We apply integrity in school by honesty, honor, respect, social responsibility, and the courage to stand up for what we believe is right. Honesty and trust are central to integrity. Acting with honor and truthfulness are also important for someone with integrity. When we are honest we built strength of character that will allow us to be good with God and others.
Cheating is not something to be proud of, here are 10 reasons why cheating is wrong. Cheating in American high schools is widespread. A recent ABCNews poll of 12- to 17-year-olds provided these statistics: •70% of teens say at least some kids in their school cheat on tests. •60% have friends who have cheated.
My plan for academic success is to pass all my classes with a C average. Another plan for academic success that I have is to choose classes that best fit my understandings and personality. Also I would like to get my license as a senior and have a job. Another academic plan for success is to have friends, friends are important to success because if I have no friends I’ll have no one to talk to while I’m working on school work. As well as the fact that I’m horrible at all my english classes, it might be a good idea to get those improved.
Academic success to me is achieving good grades and understanding the material to get good grades. Academic success also means to have an good attendance. I already get mostly A’s and B’s, but I am not good at staying on top of things. To improve my academic success I will attend class more often, be more organized, pay attention in class, and not procrastinate.
“Academic success,” for me, doesn’t mean graduating high school with a 4.0 GPA and attending an Ivy League college with a ton of scholarships. Personally, the term “academic success” means being able to feel proud of my own dedication and the hard work that I put in. Having the end result ultimately be, walking across the stage at graduation; whether that be at my high school graduation next year or my college graduation down the line. I know I will have achieved the epitome of my own “academic success” when I am dress in a cap and gown and am sitting at either of my graduations. All I hope for is that I am able to attend a college I want to attend, have proud parents, and in the end, proud of myself.
