2.1 Individuals use social networking sites for a variety of many different reasons from using it as a pastime/form of entertainment to expressing opinions which generally occurs at night time when people settle down before going to sleep or during lunch breaks. Individuals can also use social media to find information of their friend’s activities worldwide, stay up-to-date with news and share up to date moments (photos/videos) all within a few clicks. Moreover, social media can be also used to portray opinions, speak to family and friends, comment on groups and meet new people.

It is also cost-effective, responsive, and is good for many purposes such as receiving complaints, releasing media information and allows them to monitor subjects for investigation; these give the government opportunities to progress.
Another reason for using social media by the government is that they can target it more people and therefore get a different view point because stereotypically the audience you get in polls and petitions (which are the more traditional ways for the government). Usually by this you gather information and viewpoints by the elderly or middle age whereas the audience you get from users online are typically much younger allowing the government to get a wider range of views.

This is an advantage because it allows other users to know who you are before they request to add you. Generally, people follow due to similar interests to keep in contact. A typical component of a social media profile is your privacy settings. It is extremely important to change these settings in order to have a level of protection they require. Adapting your privacy settings is an advantage as it puts the control into your hands by choosing how much information is exposed to the public, preventing complete strangers finding out your information. Changing your privacy settings can also make it so people have to put in a request to follow you which means no one sees anything on your profile except your username and profile picture until the use allows them
