It is very true that African Americans have made many strides in the past few decades in relation to equality and freedom. However, racism and segregation are still present to this day. Many African Americans are killed and mistreated simply because of the pigment in their skin. The only difference is, many people are still oblivious to this fact more than they were years ago. This blindness comes from the idea that America has overcome these racial conditions.

The Union victory in the Civil War prompted the abolition of slavery and African American’s were granted freedom, along with rights that should have been there from the start, however, white supremacy overpowered in the South, forcing African Americans back into a state of slavery. The Reconstruction era, the postwar rebuilding of the South, proved to be an attempt towards change in the lives of African Americans but the opportunities were only available for a limited time. African Americans had hopes of a new South after the Civil War was fought yet that was only accomplished to a certain extent. In today 's society, numerous occurrences indicate that minorities are still being oppressed by the lawmakers of society. A few black people feel that the oppression years have passed; however, a vast majority believes that the world is concealing their true intentions of continued oppression. Barack Obama made history by becoming this country’s first black male president. However, we still have a horde of issues to tackle before achieving equality. It breaks my heart to learn of the countless deaths of minorities by police officers without holding them accountable.

Defense attorneys are considered to be one of the most important aspects of a case. The way they decide to go about their case effects verdicts immensely. Samuel Leibowitz, the defense attorney for the Scottsboro Boys case, and Atticus, from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, are both defense attorneys put in difficult positions and tasked with controversial cases. They were given the difficult duty of defending a black man accused of raping a white woman, in a time filled with prejudice. A white woman’s word was always valued over a black man’s, making the case extremely arduous.

Since the 1930’s, milestones have been reached as to racial equality and equal rights in America, but there are still issues between black and white. Today, racism is an existing part of society. News headlines of “Police Brutality” flash across the television screen from time to time. Racial stereotypes are a common mindset for some people. Back in the 1930’s however, racism and segregation was everywhere.

Equality is farther than most people realize. In the article “The Social Construction of Difference” by Allan G. Johnson published on February 20th, 2005, the author tells the truth behind this day in ages society. The world and how it’s order between each set of people is organized. The main point written by the author is that the most privileged category in today’s society is the white race. The author also states that males have a big advantage in society as well.

Throughout the entire time period, whites continued to be opposed to Reconstruction for their own personal reasonings, and they kept resisting any attempt by the federal government to give equality to all African Americans. Once Reconstruction came to an end, there was then a time period of segregation towards blacks, leading to Jim Crow laws and a loss of focus toward African American civil rights. Since there were two world wars in a 50 year time period, the focus towards these civil rights was majorly sidetracked. In today’s society there is still believed to be problems with white supremacy and prejudice towards blacks. There will always be people who won’t ever believe in equality, but the rights that are reserved today are a major step

Diversity is taken for granted in many places, such as Skokie, because people who are exposed to diversity early on in their lives do not know that it’s rare to have that diversity. They are accustomed to seeing other races and ethnicities besides their own. People are not always exposed to diversity at all or are used to having token people exposed to them being seen on tv or in movies. Tokenism is a big part of American culture and people have the token Black person, the token Hispanic person, or in extremely rare cases the token white person. Tokenism is a false diversity that allows the audience to believe that it is diverse when in actuality it is not.

As a nation, America has made vast progress in improving the rights of non-white individuals. Does that mean that we are liberated from our guilty participation in inflicting pain and trauma upon millions of peoples in order to become the exceptional nation that we claim to be today? Of course not. We should never forget that we stole and colonized land that was already peacefully inhabited by the Native Peoples in order to achieve Manifest Destiny. We should never forget that we brutally snatched, traumatized, and enslaved hundreds of thousands of Africans in order to profit from and cultivate our own economic desires.

What should a college or university do when a racial issue occurs on campus? I use the word "when" because let 's face it racial tension nowadays is a thing that has been happening so often that it is expected to happen. Colleges are having racial problems like in Duke, had a fraternity, The Kappa Sigma, hosting a party with students wearing Asian-style clothing and mimicking stereotypical Asian accents. Campuses could counter these types of things by altering the students ' views and showing their support in the diversity of their college, like a multicultural event of some kind. We don 't have to stand for racism, we can fight back with kindness and educate the ignorant and enlighten them.
