The wonders of Animism have often left spectators both amazed and bewildered. Its spectacular rituals are definitely sights to witness. Animism is the belief in spirits living in objects such as trees and animals. Followers of Animism believe these spirits need to be appeased through sacrifices and religious rituals. Animism in Indonesia in particular tends to be displayed in many traditions practiced by the multiple people groups. People from all religions, and from all provinces are influenced by the lasting influence of their Animistic predecessors. Although multiple religions, namely Islam, Hindu-Buddhism and Christianity, flooded Indonesia after the early arrival of the Animistic Austronesians from Taiwan, Animism kept its strong hold on the rich …show more content…

Animism is found in almost all Hindu-Buddhist art forms. Because Animism has embedded itself into Hinduism and Buddhism, it has affected the art as well. For example, two different kinds wayang presentations (Indonesian shadow puppets), wayang kulit and wayang golek, both have been influenced by Animism. Many of the Balinese dances tourists come watch also contain Animist beliefs. These dances are now performed as both religious rituals and entertainment. Religious dances are called Wali, and dances solely for entertainment are called Bebalihan. Nevertheless, all the dances are interesting to watch. Animistic art is also found in Toraja. Torajans carve wooden figurines of the deceased. These figurines were dressed with favorite belongings of the deceased. Then, they were positioned in hollowed out caverns in the cliffs. Animism has definitely left a positive impact on all of Indonesian art. Even today, many tourists come to witness Aniist-influenced dances or rituals, boosting the tourism and economy.
