AUTONOMOUS CARS - The Future of Mobility
Introduction
Driving is the answer to a lot of transportation needs. You drive to the cinema to watch the latest blockbusters, you drive to the mall when you need to do some last-minute shopping, you also drive to the hospital when you need treatment. Do you believe that a time will come when you do not need to get behind the wheel to move a car? Imagine sitting in a self-driving vehicle that not only transports you to your destination but does so without your input.
Is the idea of autonomous vehicles just an overhyped concept or are self-driving vehicles about to become a reality?
How does an autonomous vehicle work?
Self driving vehicles require the combination of advanced computer systems and different sensors to function. They are equipped with cameras, sensors, radars and a comprehensive GPS unit. All these are to enable the vehicle sense the road, its immediate environment and

Most manufacturers in the automobile industry are interested in creating cars very similar to those driven today by with the self-driving feature. Other manufacturers are looking to create small and more compact cars or larger cars without a driver's seat. This trend is not limited to cars alone. Ongoing research is focused on the replacement of traditional buses and taxis and creating self-driving vehicles suitable for public transport.
Features of The Autonomous Vehicle in Today's Cars
Although no fully autonomous vehicle are available presently, a lot of cars being manufactured have one or two self-driving features. Some of such cars include;
1. The BMW 5 Series.
It was fully redesigned and equipped with self driving features such as a remote control keyfob used to park the vehicle in either parallel or perpendicular parking spots without a driver in the car. The Traffic Jam Assistant makes use of lane markings and vehicles ahead to manage the speed in traffic with minimal input from the
SUMMARY: Business reporter, Drew Harwell in the article, We Drove Cars That Can Drive Themselves — and Cost Only $20,000, published on April 5th, 2016 addresses the issue of driverless cars in the 21st century and explains the reasons why we should not rely on these relatively new cars. Harwell supports his claim first by framing his argument, through the use of evidence. He explains in detail what these cars actually are, for example, he cites an experiment he conducted driving these types of cars and provided information regarding price, miles per gallon, technology, and efficiency of each of the cars tested. Second by, appealing to the reader’s emotions.
The system can tell if you are drowsy or tired. If you are a notification light in the shape of a coffee mug will appear to notify you that your drowsiness is impacting your driving. We found this fact interesting as it is very practical and smart technology that is relatively new. The technology can alert the driver, which in theory, could lead to better on road safety. The idea of increasing road safety in a practical and efficient way was interesting to
If the value put into the self-driving cars just cares about manufacturers and their consumers, the autonomous cars will not be accepted by the society. On the contrary, if the value is decided by people like pedestrians, the smart cars may lose their consumers. When people cannot have unified answers on moral problems, it is not appropriate to put people’s value into self-driving cars. Even though one day want to have a try on giving cars the moral guidance, who can be the leader
First of all, self-driving cars will be very expensive to purchase, and most people won’t be able to afford them. According to the article (What it really costs to turn a car into a self-driving vehicle), “When you ask carmakers and industry
An autonomous vehicle is a vehicle that is capable of operating on the roadways without human input. These vehicles have the ability to sense their environment and react accordingly [4]. With large strides being made in technology, there is much debate regarding if autonomous vehicles should be allowed. The proponents for autonomous vehicles argue that it will decrease the number of car crashes, and those against autonomous vehicles voice concerns about loss of jobs and that the car could be hacked. To establish an argument why autonomous vehicles should be allowed, the argument is presented as a list of premises and conclusions explained and outlined below.
What is a driverless car? The dictionary describes a driverless car as, “an autonomous car and unmanned ground vehicle; a vehicle capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input.”, but it is much more than that, it is an innovation to the driving world. A driverless car works by using radars, ultrasonic sensors, and cameras. The radar works by sensing nearby cars and letting car know where it is.
In 1962 the first self driving car was invented by Robert Fenton, this vehicle was not intended for passengers as the whole inside of the vehicle was full of electronic equipment. This car also needed a track for guidance. In the 1980’s a group of German scientist built a vehicle
International Journal of Students ' Research in Technology & Management, 2(6), 203-206. The autonomous car or the driverless car can be referred to as a robotic car in simple language. This car is capable of sensing the environment, navigating and fulfilling the human transportation capabilities without any human input. It is a big step in the advancing future technology.
Vehicle-to-vehicle communication will transform driving as we know it. It will assist in preventing accidents, reducing traffic, and getting the passenger(s) to where they need to be on time. Autonomous cars will be the future of driving. One of, if not, the most common inquiry people make about autonomous cars is, “how safe are they?”
The companies today that are attempting to make self driving cars have had a huge success and this is a good thing because they have found that if the road is occupied only by self driving cars then it would be safer in a number of ways. One reason stated in the article “ The 3 biggest ways self- driving cars will improve our lives,” by Cadie Thompson, is that “ if 90% of cars were autonomous, the number of accidents would fall from 6 million a year to 1.3 million a year.” This would be a drastic change, and would help save hundreds of thousands of lives each year. Also in the article titled “3 reasons you should embrace self driving cars,” by Drew Hendricks, it says that “ there’s no emotion involved, and certainly no distractions.” This means that all distractions
Self-driving cars have been discussed for many years now, and they will be used for our society everyday use in the future. Some of the possible causes of self-driving cars are distracted driving, drunk driving, and texting while driving. Many car companies, colleges, and universities have been involved along with technology and car experts. Some of the possible solutions to this problem are to help reduce traffic congestion, deaths, and fatal car accidents. Self-driving cars are new emerging technology, and it will be used for our society everyday use in the future.
The clock will still tick. For many people, the future seems scary since you never know what will happen out in the world. Today I am going to tell you that even with the challenges and roadblocks we face, the future is not as scary as we might think. In these following paragraphs, I will talk about how in the future we will have the ability to make self-driving vehicles, Africa self-sufficient, renewable energy cost less than non-renewable energy, and even make a drug that can help people with autism.
The benefits of owning a self driving car are so great, more should be on the road. One of the greatest, most desirable advantages is that there will be way less car accidents, and less fatal ones too. The article, “Self driving cars are just around the corner. Is it a good thing?”
Technology nowadays is only getting smarter and better as the years go by; driverless cars are a big success for people that have been trying to make this happen for years. Even though driverless cars exist now and have been being tested on, many companies have not worked out all the bugs on them so driverless cars are yet to be released until companies can ensure the safety of the owners of the car and the other drivers on the road. Driverless cars could possibly lessen traffic and also lessen deaths and car accidents that happen around the world. Self driving cars were always a talk of the future and the future is now. What are driverless cars?
Across the world, hundreds of millions or even perhaps billions of people will be safer than ever, more prosperous than ever, and more efficient than ever. Despite, some people will say self-driving cars will foster an environment of less safety, rather than more. They say hackers may be able gain control of cars from the outside. However, this is not true because the sensors on a car can and will be programmed to automatically detect and shut down malicious invaders, through reasons which I actually will explain later. When the next great locomotion revolution comes, everyone needs to be ready to embrace all the benefits and great luxuries which will come with self-driving cars without any hesitation.
