The beauty of Music
Did you know there are few activities in life that utilizes the entire brain, and music is one of them? (ScienceDaily). All humans can bond over music, whether it be rock, classical, or any other genre. Music can be very powerful in ways that words cannot. “What I am is a huge music fan. Music has always been part of the emotional soundtrack of my life.” (Gayle Forman). In the book If I Stay by Gayle Forman, music is a huge part of not only Mia’s life, but everyone involved with her. Mia plays the cello, her parents were in a rock band, and so is her boyfriend, Adam. Forman used music as a motif to divide forces but also to unite them in many ways.

Music will tear Mia and her boyfriend, Adam, apart because Adam lives in Oregon, and Mia plans to go away to pursue her career with the cello. Adam is also starting his career by gaining popularity in a band he is apart of. “Just like with Shooting Star’s meteoric rise, my admission to Julliard--if it happens--will create certain complications that have already cropped up in the last few months.” (Forman 7). She is considering her boyfriends feelings, while still wanting to go to Julliard. Mia and Adam get torn apart because of an accident Mia was in that caused her to go into a coma. Mia is in a coma for a couple weeks. She is deciding whether to stay and live, or move on into the light. Mia feels torn, wanting to stay for her boyfriend. Also wanting to go for her family that passed in the accident as well. Adam told Mia to stay because he doesn't want to feel the loss of her gone. “Don't make me write a song about you Mia.” (Forman 187). Adam turns his feelings into music. Adam writes about everything from the fun night times, to Mia, and her accident. Music tears the lives of Mia and Adam
