How I became an amateur boxer There’s a huge difference between being in shape and being in fighting shape - I never thought about that until after I decided to get myself into boxing. Before I started boxing, I was just a regular gym rat - I worked my abs, pecs, and arms pulling and shoving around weights. But then something pretty bad happened to me. I was out at the bar with a couple of buddies. We were just having a conversation at the bar when a drunk man stumbled over us. He singled me out, got angry, and started swinging fists. I was barely able to defend myself, and had to get stitches. I realized after that, it’s not enough just to have big muscles. I had to know how to use them. To prove that you’re healthy enough and fit for boxing, you need to pass a physical. Once you feel you’re ready for competitive boxing, ask your coach or your gym manager about arranging an appointment with a physician who specializes in conducting amateur boxing physicals. If you pass the physical, obtain a hard copy and fill out an application from USA boxing. If your gym is certified by the USA Boxing Commission, they will have applications on hand. In addition to your physical results and your application, collect two passport-sized photos, a copy of your birth certificate and the registration fee, and send them in an envelope to a local boxing committee. Signing up for your first event You’ve made it this far - now it’s time to actually get in the boxing game. Once you’ve trained and reached a level where you and your coach are confident in your abilities, your coach will announce that you’re ready to fight in the ring.
