Biodiversity is a variety of the same genes within a plant or animal species, or the variety of species among plants and animals exhibiting their richness in a particular ecosystem. Biodiversity is important for human wellbeing since mankind, being part of the ecosystem depends on the biodiversity in it just like other species. Biodiversity across the globe is not evenly distributed due to the main factors of temperature and precipitation. Some places on earth are blessed with species that are found nowhere else (endemic) while other locations on the planet have lost a vast majority of the habitat that was once home to a lot of species. This led to the concept of biodiversity hotspots which are large vegetations of land that are concentrated with endemic species and have lost a major portion of the habitat (at least 70%). (Mittermeier et. al., 2011) describes what qualifies an area to be designated as a biodiversity hotspot as its endemism (at least 1,500 endemic plant species, that is …show more content…
(Kremen et. al., 1999). The only continent that has a higher plant family than the Madagascar and Indian Ocean Hotspot is Australia. This hotspot is named so because it includes the independent island countries Seychelles, Mauritius and Comoros. Madagascar has 178 species of frogs, of which 99% are endemic. The 21% and 29% of all primate genera and families found in Madagascar has accorded it the priority for primate diversity conservation. Madagascar is estimated to have lost about 80% of its forest cover. Slash-and-burn agriculture which is the prominent form of agriculture in the tropics is also the biggest threat to biodiversity in Madagascar through the practice of shifting cultivation which may not involve fallowing. Other threats to the hotspot include timber exploitation, hunting and charcoal production (Mittermeier et. al.,
The forests of Côte d’Ivoire have been cut down and are mostly gone, replaced with cocoa farms. Many animals that were once there are now critically endangered or extinct due to deforestation. (D) Since people are now cutting down forests and replacing them with cocoa farms, a lot of animals have lost their homes and communities. This has gone to an extreme level, as now most of the animals that seemed as if they could never go extinct now have, and many are critically endangered because of all the deforestation. Not to mention the effects on the environment deforestation has on climate change.
Both north and south sides of the mountain were sampled at low and high points of elevation for the amount of plant species present. Figure 1: Representation of belt transect *not scaled
The student will investigate and understand that environments support a diversity of plants and animals that share limited resources. Key concepts include a)
Research Project: Primates Bioko Island is the home to several endangered primates, due to the illegal hunting and the selling of bushmeat (Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program). Bioko Island is part of the African country of Equatorial Guinea (Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program). The island is located 20 miles off the coast of Cameroon, and it is primarily intact forest areas with a few small villages, furthermore, the capital of Bioko alone, contains a population of nearly 100,000 residents (Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program). Despite their intact forest areas, several primate species are endangered, and other animal species are becoming vulnerable to becoming endangered. This is due to the illegal hunting of wildlife—bushmeat.
Current levels of plant and biodiversity on Easter Island in comparison with the past biodiversity levels, have significantly lowered. Today, Easter Island has a neutral climate, fertile soil, withered lands, and only forty-seven identified species. In contrast, historical Easter Island consisted of tropical forests with different species of trees and different species of animals. 5. Today’s levels of biodiversity on Easter Island can be explained in terms of complexity and disturbance because the Easter Island population unknowingly overexploited their island’s natural resources because they were isolated from other islands.
Darwin’s discovery of an endemic species was also mentioned in the video. An endemic species is one that is only grown in a certain place. The endemic species that Darwin found was a plant, which is only native to the Galapagos Islands. Overall, this video highlighted the theory of evolution, as well as natural selection. The example of natural selection is shown through the traits of birds being determined by the conditions on the surrounding
Biodiversity is the variety of life in the world. Biodiversity is important everywhere because it is a resource in which all living organisms and future generation organisms depend on. It is important to California because California has many different bioregions. If California did not have biodiversity in its bioregions, one animal would have to adapt to all the different regions. By adapting, it would have to live off the land and eat its own species.
The illegal hunting and trade of primate meat is a large contributing factor to the decline of primate species in the tropics. This, in addition to habitat loss and fragmentation, disease, and the pet trade, is putting many primate species at high risk of extinction. Poverty, population growth, construction of roads, emergence of regional and international markets, and new hunting technology are triggering the increased hunting pressure on forest mammals. Primate species are especially vulnerable to increased hunting pressure because of their slower reproductive cycles. The decline of primate species must be stopped to avoid their extinction and the potential consequences that this could have for tropical forests.
Now, may I ask you something? Have you ever seen a primate wandering in its own habitat peacefully? I bet the answer would be no. In this era of globalisation, many forests have been cut down, both legally and illegally, in the name of development. Yet, what we seem to not acknowledge is the fact that the very forests that have been destroyed to pamper our endless lust to materialistic luxuries is also home to many endangered primates.

DNA in Forensic Science DNA is the carrier of genetic information in humans and other living organisms. It has become a very useful tool in forensic science since it was discovered. In forensic science, DNA testing is used to compare the genetic structure of two individuals to establish whether there is a genetic relationship between them. One example of the use of DNA in forensic science that is important in biology today is comparing a suspect’s DNA profile to DNA that was discovered at a crime scene.
Introduction: Description: Deforestation is defined as the permanent destruction of forests in order to make land available for other uses. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) 18 million acres of forest are lost each year. This equals to approximately 36 football fields of forest being cleared each minute. Though deforestation occurs all over the world, it’s the tropical forests which are being particularly targeted. Due to this countries such as Indonesia, Brazil, the Democratic republic of Congo and Thailand have a very
Did you know that there is numerous species that are endangered and becoming extinct? One terrestrial mammal that is experiencing threats to their extinction are lemurs, this jeopardized spices' is most common in our zoos today then in the wildlife. African islands including Madagascar is their natural habitat, and studies demonstrate that is their only home in the world because the geographical location is isolated. There are different kinds of lemurs and some of the most common ones that we know today are: the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) , silky sifaka, mouse lemurs. The scientific name for lemurs is “Lemuroidea”.
Introduction: Biodiversity is important for all living organism including plants and animals. Without biodiversity, there would be no balance between organism and their environment. Biodiversity helps to maintain the balance of nature to sustain all life on earth; one species will not overpower another because of the effect of biodiversity. Not only does biodiversity maintain the balance of nature it is also used to indicate health in the aquatic community. Dissolved-oxygen is measured in the aquatic environment to test the health of the water.
