Blood is a liquid connective tissue made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and liquid plasma. Within blood are nutrients, gases and waste substances which are taken around the body via blood vessels.
Blood vessels allow blood from the heart to flow quickly and efficiently around the body and back to the heart. There are three main types of blood vessels: veins, capillaries and arteries. There functions differ therefore they are structured differently.
Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the body’s tissues. They experience high levels of blood pressure due to the forceful push of fresh oxygenated blood from the heart. They are thin, less elastic and less muscular than the walls of arteries because of the lack on blood pressure. They rely on the assistances of muscle contractions to push blood back to the heart. It provides support and protection for the soft tissues that make up the rest of the body.
