I agree with what you say about de las Casas "narratives were only effective to an extent. " I think it was admirable what he did do because the atrocities may have continued for much longer had he not spoke up. In speaking up, Casa was "accused of treason and even endured charges of heresy" (Bartolome De Las Casas 39). Casas went into seclusion for 7 years and then returned to political activity after which time, laws began to take effect to protect the Indians (39). I see de las Casas as an early activist and social reformer.
After years of little progress, in 1520 Charles V granted a hearing for Las Casas’s crusade. During this hearing, Las Casas argued that the time for military conquest had passed and now was the time for peace. Despite Charles V ruling in favor of Las Casas, very little could be done for the natives due to distance. Although, Bartolome de Las Casas did not set out to become an activist, intending only to settle land and preach the gospel, his faith lead him to see that true Christians did not act the way the Spanish Conquistadors did and that something must be done to right the wronged.

Women have had fewer rights than men for a long time. They get paid significantly less and are often seen as objects to claim or do house chores. Sandra Cisneros has written a story that takes the reader through a neighborhood of women who are beat-down. But, through the characterization of Esperanza and Sally in “The House on Mango Street”, Cisneros has portrayed the importance of being an autonomous individual and not falling into gender roles. Esperanza illustrates the importance of independence because of her unique characteristics.
In the book, The House on Mango Street, there seems to be one thing that connects everyone together. Everyone who is stuck on Mango Street is in poverty one way or another. They have all been negatively affected by poverty. The reader can see this in multiple places, such as Esperanza, Esperanza’s family, and Esperanza’s friends. All of these people with different background and different beliefs brought together by a single entity.
In The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, a young girl narrates her families seemingly perpetual moving. Through detailed imagery she develops a tone which communicates the families’ socio-economic status, care for one another, and vison to one day live in a house. When the narrator moves into her families’ new house on Mango Street, she states, “There is no front yard, only four little elms the city planted by the curb” (Cisneros 552). The four elm trees Cisneros writes about are symbolic of the narrator and her three siblings. The young girls states there is no front yard and the trees did not grown their naturally, concluding that they did not belong there.
In the novellas; A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and The House on Mango Street both of the main characters have a difficult time fitting into their society. Esperanza, from The House on Mango Street, is ashamed of where she lives. Stephen, from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, does not even fit in with his family. Both novellas show that it is possible to find yourself and not fit it, and that it is okay to be different. Esperanza and Stephen have overcome the difficulty of not fitting in, finding themselves and a future, and the courage to be different.
Choosing the right site for a house was nearly as important as choosing the right claim. Building next to a small hill provided some protection from the constant wind. Being near a stream meant easy access to water. But building too close also made flooding a very real danger. Building a
As you make your way to Downtown Los Angeles, you will notice that there are towns for different types of cultures. To name a couple, there is China Town and Korea Town. Olvera street, located in the oldest part of Los Angeles, is a street dedicated to preserving the Hispanic culture. Olvera street also known as La Placita Olvera or El Pueblo Historical Monument is open seven days a week (Rondeau). Although Olvera Street is similar to the other towns, it provides a unique experience through its numerous events that celebrate Mexican traditions.
In the mid-1990’s, Sandra Cisneros bought a house in the historic King William neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas. She made improvements to her home and painted it purple to reflect her Tejano heritage. However, her neighbors felt that the purple did not abide by the housing regulations of the neighborhood and petitioned the local commission to force Cisneros to change the color. I believe Sandra Cisneros should be able to keep her house purple.
In the book, The House on Mango Street, Esperanza is portrayed as a young innocent girl that drastically changes over the course of the book. Esperanza is new to mango street and encounters many challenges but also positive experiences that she is able to take away from mango street.
