Water Pollution: Causes And Effects

There are millions of dolphins out in the oceans and they are declining fast because people couldn’t take another 12 steps to get to the trash cans that are all over the place in cities. Teens are the ones who mostly litter. Kamilo, an island in Hawaii is surrounded by thousands pieces of trash. They now call that place the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It used to be a beautiful island but is now ruined by trash.

This shows that an environmental threat that blue crabs face is pollution because if about 1 million animals are dying each year because of pollution, we have a serious problem. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Furthermore, another ecological hazard that this incredible animal faces is fishing and it’s equipment. According to the text, “Modern fishing methods have created some serious problems for the ocean. The populations of almost all fish species that we eat have shrunken,”(Dignan 14). This proves that another environmental threat that blue crabs faces are fishing because they may not be a type of fish, but, like most crabs, they are fished, caught and sold.

Tilikum has been reported to be seen floating in the water's surface for hours something that it's not normal in the wild. After a year in isolation they retuned Tilikum to perform. Aggression towards humans is rarely seen in the wild but why is it that the orcas in SeaWorld are aggressive toward the trainer? They live in cramped tiny pools and are forced to live with other orcas that are not related to them this makes them stressful and that why they are aggressive toward humans and sometimes each other. Besides Tilikum recently on September 20th, 2015 on of San Diegos Orcas named "Nakai" hit his face with a portion of the pool during show time despite the whales injury they kept the show running.

This makes boat owners very vulnerable to a non-profit year. On average, a boat fishing for King Crab makes around $850 million. Boat owners get 50% of that which leaves them with $425 million with expenses still remaining (Alaskan Seafood, 1). “Owners are accumulating costs of about $1,000 a day for such expenses as insurance, mortgage fees and food for crew members” (Deadliest Catch' Fishery, 1). Holding the boats just days before the season starts, and the accumulating cost of sitting at the docks, has frustrated many boat owners.

Sharks, dolphins, turtles, seals and seabirds all get tangled in these nets, as by-catch, with no way to get out. Some of the animals that are caught die, either while they’re being dragged along the bottom of the ocean or when the fishermen bring them on deck and don’t put them back fast enough. FAO experts assessment concluded that there are roughly 27 million tonnes of global by-catch for every 77 million tonne catch. This statistic means almost 1/3 of every catch is by-catch. Fish populations are on the decline, no thanks to carless fishermen and their pollution.

Abigail tells us that noise pollution is hurting animals that use sonar to get around are becoming closer to extinction. The animals hear sonar devices, sound waves from boats, and oil rigs that are really loud. This can cause the animals to have mass strandings, reckless diving, being unable to find food, and have chronic stress. Abigail goes on to inform us that cruise ships have also done a great deal of damage to the ocean life. Since there are poor laws in place regarding the way they dispose of the waste from the ships, it all goes into the ocean untreated with many harmful bacteria, pathogens, and other stuff we dispose of.
