CAN CELLPHONES BE AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL? As I begin my journey to school, I realized that most of the people I come across with have cellular phones in their hands. Some are texting, calling, taking “selfies”, or scanning through their Facebook newsfeed. Come to think of it, I wondered, are these the only use of cellular phones in humanity? Well, I’d have to sya when I sat in class the whole use of it changed. With the use of the different applications contained in a cellular phone, some began taking down notes, searching the dictionary for unfamiliar words and taking pictures of pop sheets instead of having it photocopied. Cell phones are not only cell phones; they are also mini-computers. The only difference from a computer lab filled with computers or a cart of net books to that of the cell phone is that it is a “personal technology”. Most students have invested great deal of time learning about the features of the cell phone, how to navigate and the limitations of the phone. The other reason to really rethink the cell phone debate is because learning on the cell phone can extend beyond the walls of the school or confines of a class period. (Ormiston, Meg) The different features of our cell phones helps us improve our efficiency in some of our skills such as typing, our cell phones keypads are designed alike to that of a computer’s keyboard, to input different information which we’ve gathered and store it in our phone’s memory through the cell phone compatible applications of MS Word, MS Excel or MS Powerpoint. Capturing and saving moments both in and out of the school, through photos or videos are also part of the cell phones advantageous features. Humans came first before technology. WE created all these technological equipment we use each day, therefore it is our sole responsibility to make good use of it in the most positive way possible. Cell phones are not distracters, they can become a successful learning tool because of the many educational features it has. If it is only a distracter in class because some applications or facets it has minimizes learner’s participation and it should be banned then why not ban pencils and pens also because you could use it to poke someone in the eye for bullying you in school? All things in this world have its advantages and disadvantages but why not focus at the advantages of cell phone use to maximize the purpose of its invention. The idea of creating the cell phone rooted from the invention of a telephone and the discovery of a telephone came from the idea of the invention of a calculator, therefore a cell phone is in the first place an educational tool, just as a calculator
