Is cheating in school right? Everyday at school, I can see more and more people cheating off others, whether it be at lunch, over messaging, or even at the beginning of some classes. First off, cheating can break the code of conduct in many ways, like disrespecting others rights (i.e. teachers and/or other students), or by breaking general school policy. Secondly, cheating is specifically mentioned in the school guidelines and how it is considered “falsification” .
Cheating is not only an issue in the classroom, but outside of it as well. Cheating has become one of the top reasons relationships have tended to last much shorter spans in contrast to previous times. Consequently, cheating hinders more than just a person’s ability to learn, but it also negatively affects their character. If you asked an average high school student to give you reasons for cheating in school, I am certain the list would be never ending - from reasons as simple as being too lazy to complete the tasks, to some students just flat out not understanding their assignments. Jones suggest that, “The reasons students engage in academic dishonesty vary, but as commonly understood, the overriding reason is performance” (144).
Cheating comes with major consequences. Cheating in high school and college are two diverse things. Unlike High School if caught cheating the student doesn’t just receive a failing grade on the assignment and receive detention. Students fail the entire class, possible suspension or explosion. Depending on the college you are attending and their rules and consequences vary, in Jan Archer’s article “The Effects on Students Who Get Caught Cheating in College” it is explained that if caught cheating it goes onto your permanent record.
Even though there are ways to help a student not to cheat or plagiarize is to keep a record of their work, ensure that it matches their topic and try as much as you can to use your words and knowledge. Students cheat to raise their grades. The latest national study from the Centre for Academic Integrity shows that “to get good grades” was a primary motive for cheating among high school students (McCabe, 2001) (Finn, K. V., & Frone, M. R. ,2004). Raising the grade is one of the most requirable pros that a cheating students aim for. On the other hand, some students might not be self confident, and thinks that google, Wikipedia and all the online sources are way better and can help them easily.
According to my research, many students cheat for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons may be because students, especially college students, are very stressed out. Many students are emotionally affected when it comes to their studies because of family issues. Students may also be depressed because they have been ostracized and bullied. If students are just given a chance to improve their grades then they can accept that challenge, proving teachers that they are capable of enough to work harder.
All students want in school is to get good grades and sometimes they will get desperate and being desperate leads to cheating. When students cheat all they think about is getting a good grade most of the time. Other students don’t care about school and they cheat. This can affect not only the student his/her self if they get caught but it can affect the class and how other students learn, because if one student sends out a test or homework than other students will have it and then pretty soon most students will have it and not have learned anything. There’s is no conclusion to cheating, because no matter what, students will cheat weather they know if it 's right or wrong.
With online college students being introduced to technology in the school system, many try to take the easy way out by cheating. Cheating in online environments can include looking up answers during a test, plagiarism, or any form of using another 's work without proper credit. Faculty in the school system are doing everything possible to decrease the frequency of cheating, because it has negative effects on both the students and staff. According to “Why we cheat” by Ferric .C Fang and Arturo Casadevall, it is explained that “Humans are surprisingly quick to cheat.”( Ferric .C Fang, Arturo Casadevall 34) when given a motive to cheat many students do so. In a study done by Dan Ariely students were told if they completed a set of math problems they would get a cash reward.
Students don’t have the time they need to study so they find it easier to just cheat and assume they will be fine but in life doesn’t work that way. There are many reasons why students cheat and some are able to justify as to why they do it. Paul Craig says in his article, “Instructing Students in Academic Integrity”, that the reason students plagiarize is to “maximize personal gain” (50). These cheaters try to avoid punishment at all costs and will deny any responsibility that they may have for their actions. Students feel pressured to get good grades and

With cheating, it starts off in high school and repeatedly doing so to maintain good grades. Through a survey of 70 high schools, McCabe found out within 24,000 students more than half have admitted in plagiarism, cheating through a test, and copying homework. Cheating in high school is continued to cheat in college up to 70%, the surveys are stabled throughout the years that follow common behaviors as to why students cheat. Which brings out the high school education such as not teaching students how to do their own research and paraphrasing other’s work, leading student to just copy and paste straight from the internet because they lack confidence of their own thoughts so
