8. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE Hydrogenation is most recent process that is used in almost every chemical industry. Hence, it is important to understand all the safety aspects related to hydrogenation process. As this is directly related to losses occurring in the particular industry. And which is further related to economic losses of the industry. This leads to the huge production loss. The main purpose of the research is the safety of process plants for e.g. Hydrogenation. As the chemical industry expands, the chances of hazards have been increasing to which the workers working in the plant premises are exposed. But these solvents sometimes pose the serious problem in the chemical industry. These solvents are highly flammable and highly volatile and hence, the chances of fire hazard in the process plant increases. Catalysts are used in the process to enhance the process but the catalysts used in hydrogenation process are highly active and corrosive nature. They get easily contaminated with impurities and get easily corroded if inert atmosphere is not provided. Hence, more safety has to be taken to handle these catalysts. Storage of gas under high pressure reduces the area of equipment. Due to its extreme flammable nature of hydrogen, it is even possible that the gas may get ignited even in the absence of any type of ignition source. It may also get ignited by coming in contact with the oxygen and forms flammable mixture with it. Another factor is that the hydrogen gas has the ability to slowly degrade the metal parts to which it comes in contact. Extremely low temperatures and very high pressurization for liquefaction makes the equipment brittle ultimately leading to the breakages and leaks. And the leaking hydrogen will cause the fire hazard. . Another factor affecting the safety of hydrogenation process is the scale-up problem. Usually the process is run on certain milligrams of catalysts. But when the situation of scale- up of plant comes, people usually ignore all the aspects of quantifying catalysts and takes in the proportionate amount. But this is not practically possible.
