Festival would mean a day or a period where families, friends, and people come together to celebrate and to commemorate a special event. There are many Chinese Festivals in a lunar year and each of the festivals have their own style of celebrating. There are also different types of food prepared in each festival and each of that food has their own meaning and symbolism. Symbolism is a very important factor for Chinese. Symbolism is defined as “the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character” . Every single object, act that is done or all details in life would carry a deep meaning and most of it would center on positive meanings. For example, the colour red would be the colour of happiness. The food served during Chinese festival celebration also has its own unique meaning. Chinese New Year is the festival of gatherings where family members who live far from their parents go home to celebrate the beginning of a new year. In China, Chinese New Year is a celebration for being able to survive the harsh winter and also a festival of gathering. During Chinese New Year, there are many foods that will be served over meals and also for praying purposes. Her descriptions of fervent New Year celebrations further display these beliefs associated with the Chinese population. These depictions make the plot and theme more realistic to the reader, proving it to be based off of reality and not simply emergences from Tan’s imagination. Symbolism is a used in our everyday lives that appears quite often but isn't deeply thought about. The greater meaning of symbolism is using something from a phrase to an image to represent a message. We use symbolism to gain a message in life that forever stays in our hearts. Symbolism is the use of images, colors or items through a story or time used to represent something more meaningful. For example, one may look at America's flag and think it is just a flag. False, it is red for the valor and bravery of our soldiers, the white stands for purity and innocence of our nation, and the blue signifies justice, perseverance and vigilance; it is not just a flag, it is a symbol of all the things the United States of America have been through. However, in literature symbolism plays a much more heavy role in the story. The challenges Buddhism faced as it arrived in China were mainly linguistic challenges, different philosophical context, diverse conceptions of the ideal perfect being, and the core differences in social values. Moreover, there were cultural differences between the North and the South, which lead to a different process of Buddhism’s arrival within China. The first challenge Buddhism faced was the language barrier. Buddhism was based on Sanskrit, so it was necessary to translate the teachings and dialogues from Sanskrit to Chinese.
Religion in Classical China Since human’s earliest years, we have relied on religion to guide us in countless situations; it influences almost everything we do. Personal Statement I would like to confirm that it is my motivating of Chinese culture that ignited my passion for cultural and creative industry. As a Tourism Management major student, I was able to explore the Chinese diversified cultures and landscapes, which offered me an insightful understanding of the Chinese cultural development. Under the guidance of commercialization, some cultural heritages have developed into huge tourism souvenir markets full of counterfeit and shoddy products. The over-commercialization reveals the fact that the Chinese culture is facing a severe situation. Everyone can identify themselves with a concrete culture and in every group there are numerous food dishes that satisfies one, or brings back peerless memories and feelings only they can relate to. Food itself has meaning attached to it, from the way it is prepared down to the ingredients used. Although the form of expressing or performing the culture experienced some changes but the basic idea and belief behind rarely changed. To promote Chinese culture we would refer to the essence of Chinese wisdom so the following is actual practicing of different dimensions of Chinese traditions which show the beauty of China.
