The vertebrate class Aves includes an extremely distinctive clade called the birds, estimated around 9000 species around the world. Although, birds descend from the era of dinosaurs, birds have developed unique specializations for flight. They have an exclusive "one-way" breathing system, can weigh from light to medium-heavy, yet contains strong hollow bones, comprises of dominant flight muscles, and most importantly, its feathers. Birds can very in sizes, it can be as small as the size of a thumb or as large as the size of a human being. It is believed that the evolution of birds was during the Mesozoic Era, from the dinosaurs or a near relative of dinosaurs. They have evolved from having teeth to now having toothless beaks. As time passed by, the early birds became extinct. There is a record of almost 9,721 extant and only just inexistent bird …show more content…
This type of classification is known as taxonomy. Carl Linnaeus, was the one who created the system of classification of species. The first division of classification is into Kingdom. Birds are determined to be in Kingdom Animalia. Then, the kingdom has further subdivisions called Phylum, and birds are placed in Phylum Chordata i.e. animals with …show more content…
The class Aves has 142 families. The name of the families are quiet easy to indicate as they end in a –dae. For instance, the order called Apodiformes is distributed into 2 families known as Apodidae and Hemiprocnidae. Also, there are Genus within the families. Class Aves consists of 2,057 of them. Moreover, the next step of bird classification is species. This is the smallest unit in bird classification. There are few cases in which the species are further classified into subspecies to separate them according to their geographical area. It is recorded that there are 9,702 species of birds in the
reptilian lung The most distinctive features of birds is their lungs. Bird’s lungs are small and rigid, but are are highly efficient and meet the metabolic needs of flight. Respiration in birds is unique and involves a set of nine air sacs packed between muscles. The air sacs contain blood vessels and do not undertake oxygen exchange, but rather function like bellows to move air through the lungs. While fossils generally do not preserve soft tissue such as lungs, a very fine theropod dinosaur fossil has been found in which the outline of the visceral cavity has been well preserved.
The book Peace like a river mentioned many birds through out the book. The book even starts off with swede chasing a goose, this would seem normal if you hadn't looked into it closer. The goose that swede was chasing was a snow goose
Kate Chopin’s novel, The Awakening opens with a scene of two birds, emphasizing that the motif of birds later within the novel will play an important part with setting the constant metaphor they bring. Throughout the whole novel the motif of birds is a metaphor for the Victorian women during that period -- caged birds serve as reminders of Edna’s entrapment and the entrapment of Victorian women in general. Edna makes many attempts to escape her cage (husband, children, and society), but her efforts only take her into other cages, such as the pigeon house. Edna views this new home as a sign of her independence, but the pigeon house represents her inability to remove herself from her former life, due to the move being just “two steps away” (122).
2003 #3 Birds, something we see almost on a daily basis, one here and another one over there, but how many times in our lives will we be able to witness tens of thousands of birds flying over the sky. Birds Contrast Paper Nat felt the beating of wings about him in the darkness. In the story “The Birds” by Du Maurier it is about a family who is getting attacked by birds but the whole town understands what is happening and all defend themselves. But in the movie “The Birds” by Hitcock it is a romance movie mixed with a darker film. Although both versions of the story attempts to make a lasting impact on their audiences, du Marnier’s novella is ultimately more successful due to the author’s use of mood, plot, and conflict.

Due to the aforementioned factors, we are tempted to see the species of today as a monument of the theory of evolution, but it actually undercuts the facts of evolution. Furthermore, a number of misconceptions have erupted throughout the years for the sole reason of not having an appropriate explanation for the facts of the theory of evolution. We are forced to accept wrong notions for us to be able to fully understand the said
There are a least 14 species of Darwin’s finches that have developed over millions of years. When Darwin encountered the finches on the Galapagos Islands he noticed the diversity of the Finches beaks and size compared to each other. In Figure 1 you can see this. The diet of nuts and berries that the finches had access to on the island is greatly related to the size and function of the finches beaks (Grant, 2003). The larger beaked birds fed off of hard shelled nuts, while the smaller beaked birds fed off of smaller seeds and nectar from plants.
Thinking further and associated his observations with all these theories, which made more sense. Darwin observed that there were thirteen types of finches and the only differences between them were their beaks and that they each were suitable for the type of food they ate. Also observed, traits from parents can be passed to their offspring. The organisms had more offspring that their environment could “handle”. He noticed that resources were running out and that caused competition between groups.
In the story, “on Birds, Bird Watching and Jazz” by Ellison, the interesting theory as to how Charles Porter Jr. got his nickname as “Bird “ is told using humor in his stories along with a careful choice of syntax and his diction. In the first paragraph, the author uses alliteration,”...and despite the crabbed and constricted character…” to give us an insight on the figure he is speaking about. The author also chooses these words to build up an impression and then breaks it by saying Parker was a most intensive melodist. In the second paragraph of this story, Ellison establishes what a nickname does and how it would originate. Continuing on, Ellison introduces a new fact to the audience, that jazzmen were labeled as cats because they were legends.
When insects became abundant, finches have developed smaller and longer beaks.

Throughout the Cretaceous period, the continents were being pushed further apart and the first dinosaurs walked on two legs. This all ended when a meteor hit the Earth and all the dinosaurs went extinct. 49 million years ago, the first primates were swinging in the trees and eventually walking on the ground. These evolved into who we are now. It is amazing how we came from one huge explosion, and how we have created more than those dinosaurs could have ever
