Speak a Common Language The farthest distance is not between life or death, but when I stand in front of you yet we speak a different language and we cannot communicate with each other (Tagore 2012, p. 47). Different languages bring people too many impediments. Therefore, there should be one world language that everyone speaks to overcome language barriers, bridge the gap among different cultures, and assist the development of economy. First of all, a common language is a bridge for helping people to overcome language barriers. According to Anderson (2012), a famous American linguist, in the world, there are about five thousand or six thousand languages (p. 28). Numerous languages in the world impede people’s verbal communication with each …show more content…
Some people stress that different languages can promote communication of different cultures. Nell Lake (2002), a Harvard professor, says that language plays an important role in political conflict because language could increase tensions (Para. 5). Lack (2002) also argues that “Language is more tangible than race or religion” (Para. 8). Different languages present different race and religion. For this reason, they could lead to cultural conflicts and misunderstandings of different cultural values and beliefs, resulting in the world get unstable. Nonetheless, a common language can lessen the conflicts that are caused by different cultures, which mean people will be easier to understand other people’s thoughts or ideas and they can get along with each other harmoniously. Therefore, a common language can use the power of language, such as negotiation, rather than violence to solve problems. Moreover, a common language contributes to different culture spread and protection. Some people believe that a common language will destroy the various civilizations. However, only when every people can speak the same language to apply culture in every place, will culture be inherited by every people. Reisman (2007), an expert of culture, says that culture is inherited through social application (Para. 9). Thus, a common language is a good way to gradually form the whole civilization of humanity and protect it. In addition, people use the same language can expand their horizon and enrich their lives. While diverse languages have different cultural connotations, they also are obstacles and cannot provide free and equal learning opportunities for every people to learn knowledge. According to Van Weijen (2012), a doctor of linguistics, says there are assorted academic resources in all kinds of languages and they are shown in the table as below (Para. 3). A number of languages could impede the communication and
Language helps spread and reinforce ideologies and hegemony among humans by a segregation of dominant and non-dominant groups. It is the powerful groups or individuals that usually control language. What I mean by this, is that dominant individuals expect less dominant individuals to adjust to their own language. This does not only happen between organizations but on the everyday talk in which we express our experiences by discursive
Religion also plays an important part because it offers people spiritual guidance that can help them find peace during difficult times or provide comfort when facing challenging situations. Language is another key element since it allows for communication between members of different groups while also providing insight into each group’s beliefs about life itself; this event includes understanding why certain words can be used to describe certain concepts or feelings among various populations around the world
What they want to do is also retain their own language, culture, and identity” (164-167). Here, Espada highlights how language helps people absorb new cultures and offer a wider perception of our world, but that people also want to keep their sense of self-worth without losing
language? Language is the foundation for any organism day to day interaction, language is not limited to spoken language, but also includes body language and gestures. Through language people connect and form bonds with each other; from personal experience, I have found this is to be essentially true when living in a foreign country and speaking a language that is not the primary language spoken in that country. One may not know anything at all about the other, but an instant connection is made when you hear a familiar language or the language of your childhood. For some people, their native language becomes who they are, in essence, their identity.
Language is used to convey a message as well as connect people to a particular culture or ethnicity he or she identifies with. People who share the same language share a bond and pass their history through language. In chapter one of The Skin That We Speak: Thoughts on Language and Culture in the Classroom Joanne Kilgour Dowdy speak about growing up in Trinidad and her mother insisting on her speaking in the colonizer's language rather than her native Trinidadian language. Joanne Kilgour Dowdy felt as if her identity was being pushed to the side when she was forced to speak “Colonized English” when she was at school or around the social elite of her community, and felt ridiculed from her peers for speaking proper as if she was white or of the elite social class. Dowdy major concern was how to have the freedom to go back and forth from home, language to the public language without feeling judged from both sides of her
This research paper examines the factors first generation Hmong American college students encounter while pursuing completion of higher education. Existing studies shows that many Hmong American college students encounter struggles with families’ language barriers (Lee 4), differences in cultural expectations (Vang 2), and finical issue. The struggles they face shows on the Hmong American college students academics (Vang 2). Introduction Vocabulary Hmong: Hmong are a group from the mountains of China, Laos, and Vietnam.
I agree with James Baldwin when he says that language is the key to identity and social acceptance. Depending on what language you speak and in what dialect you speak it, people can either accept you or not and they can see your identity. Suppose you are a person who comes to America from a country like Saudi Arabia. When you come you speak little English so you use Arabic to talk with your family. If someone overheard you speaking in Arabic they would most likely get scared of you and people would start to avoid you.
Lera Boroditsky, a professor at Stanford, introduces readers to the question of whether a person’s language can shape their thought processes and views of the world around them through her research conducted at Stanford and MIT. Boroditsky explores further into the questioning about a language’s influence in her article “Lost in Translation”. Boroditsky proves to an audience of broad audience of scholars and people interested in cultural psychology that a person’s language not only influences the way a person thinks but can change a person’s perception of the world and media around them. Lera Boroditsky, through her use of rhetorical questions, comparisons, and addressing the counterargument achieves her purpose of proving that language does

Learning English will help more people understand and help the government and business industries. With one unified nation, prosperity and community between cultures would grow. All of which would lead to a more outstanding and organized
(Tan 84). Peoples' communicating leads to the spread of different ideas. Language connects societies figuratively and literally. Culture and language influence people extensively which allow people to be susceptible to miscommunication when a barrier is too vast. Familial relationships disrupt from language barriers.
Migrants undergo the pressure of learning a new way of life and become familiar with the language and laws within the United States. Language barriers are fundamental obstacles for immigrants. They hinder migrants from making vital connections within their communities and even to get around on a daily basis (Garrett, 2006). Daily tasks such as taking a bus or grocery shopping can be overwhelming as they may have to communicate with other people in terms of being aware of their surroundings through conversations, reading signs or even to make purchases. Immigrants reported facing language barriers when they go to the public library, saw a doctor, at their children’s school, and when lost and seeking directions (Garrett, 2006).
Languages are complex because they are made up of many components. Some components include the culture, meaning, and interpretation. The way people understand language has to do mostly with their culture and their understanding of what is being said. Also, depending upon where someone is raised, the pronunciation of certain words can be different and therefore it influences the understanding. My goal in this paper is to demonstrate that language and culture are intertwined.
Linguistics is the systematic study of language. The scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of grammar, system and phonetics is called linguistics. A person who studies linguistics is Linguist. The word “linguist” is unsatisfactory because of its confusion which refers to someone who speaks a large number of languages. Linguists in sense of linguistics experts need not to be fluent in all languages, though they must have a wide experience of different languages.
Abstract The importance of language skills and the ability to communicate and interact with the surrounding environment is critical in the early stages of development in a child. Communication and social skills, along with learning and expressing themselves in order to interact, is highly important during the developmental period in a child’s life. These critical issues have induced the interest and concerns by both parents and researchers to explore and study the effects of bilingualism. In this paper, we will take a look at the most common myths and misunderstandings about bilingualism.
