The most significant topic that was discussed in this journal is that the compact city is more sustainable than urban sprawl. Compact city is whereby it provided a livable area which consists of infrastructures and services to be easily accessible from home to work in a way to maintain environment protection and reduce the warming of the earth. Compact cities is made up of nodes from one place to another, whereas urban sprawl is a city that grows unlimited outward of the development and is unsustainable which it can emerges into leapfrog development. Urban sprawl theory is an effect of cultures and automobile ownership. Urban growth has been inevitable throughout the time and caused population to compete for spaces. It has been estimated the population will be increasing in the coming years. Sustaining the city is important so that the future generations of the city can live in a healthy, social and political stable environment.
Kaji also (2003) mentioned that, compact city is an opportunity to form a sustainable city by two ways which are saving resources and energy and renewing the inner city to maintain the expansion of suburban in urban area. He also said that compact city and is associated by the interference of less dependent on automobile. For me, Neuman has highlight his idea that compact city is really sustainable in terms of

Urbanization is a progress to future and modernity. The urban growth has caused the infrastructure and quality of life becoming intolerable. This is in regards of housing, water, sewerage, transport, electricity, community, security, open spaces and air quality. In terms of sustainability, it depends on how dwellers manage the situation. For example, different people have different perspective such as in terms of transportation, people may choose to walk or to drive their own car. This will contribute to the sustainability of a
The Chicago 2020 plan addressed the wanting of the well-being of its residence, a prosperous economy and extended an invitation for residents to contribute their opinions. The plan also suggests the involvement of suburbs with the central city and social economical ideas. Although I disagree with Johnson

The cause that lead to the Progressive era was the Gilded Age. Industrialization during the Gilded Age is what lead to urbanization and new ideas in the Progressive era. The Progressive era was a period of social activism and political reform across the United States during the 1890s-1920s. During this period, the Progressive movement was focused on eliminating corruption within the government. It covered social reform issues relating to female suffrage, education, working conditions, unionization, urbanization, industrialization and child labor.
“Why does the city split?” I asked. “It helps the thing we are trying to build easier, see the more cities the more functions we can do to help create the thing we are building.” “That’s cool.” I said.
Ronald Reagan said, “From devastation, from utter ruin, you Berliners have, in freedom, rebuilt a city that once again ranks as one of the greatest on Earth.” He uses facts to get this point across to all of the listeners around the world, and by doing so, he has indirectly won the favor of
Urbanization, or the growth of cities, erupted during the Industrial Revolution. Cities were a place of work, innovation, and technology. Over the course of fifty years (1850-1900) more and more people moved to the cities, which caused more and more problems in them. With these problems came solutions, and those solutions led to change. These changes could be good like movements to get cleaner water or having plumbing.
Maintain status quo. According to a survey of mayors, most of them expressed desire for higher housing values. For them, the ideal neighborhood is “older areas that have maintained housing values.” In light with economic imperatives and logic, mayors need to prioritize economic growth.
There is the idea of a city, and the city itself, too great to be held in the mind. And it is in this gap (between the conceptual and the real) that aggression begins” is central to Saunders’ essay, due to the fact that this quote illustrates Saunders’ message that people tend to have misconceptions generated from their own limited experience and misconceptions can easily lead to conflicts and aggression if handled
ASSESSMENT/AUDIT 1. Understanding of why it is important to measure sustainability and the associated problems and conflicts of different indicator sets and types Evidence – It is really difficult to find exact concept for measuring sustainability. For instance the measurement of life parameters is differ between different cultures and individuals. So, different solutions will be required to be found for many different communities. However; we should not assume that things we cannot measured easily is not important.

Sustainable development aims to achieve a balance between the three pillars of sustainability, ensuring that all sectors become one entity. The disadvantage associated with this model is that each pillar is given individual recognition and not recognized as a combined entity (Giddings, Hopwood and O’Brien, 2002). This results in the

Sustainable development is a model that aims to link the idea of what is to be sustained, with what is to be developed, and focuses on three pillars, economics, social and environmental (Kates, Parris, and Leiserowitz, 2005; pp. 3). As a holistic approach it seeks to develop the three pillars, on a local, regional and global level. This paper will analyse the concept of sustainable development and the strengths and weaknesses of this approach will be discussed. Firstly, a background of this model will be presented, which will explore the three pillars. Secondly, the strengths and weaknesses will be evaluated, and lastly, a brief contrast will be provided of the opinions of sustainable development between the Global North and Global South.
Sustainability: If you take a look around at what’s really happening in our world, there’s an inescapable pattern of ‘what’s going on is simply unsustainable’ and in other words, it can’t go on for much longer. Sustainability is to “meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. As cities began to grow with the population increase, the need for a sustainable development became more apparent as resources began to diminish in quantity and value. Left to it’s own devices, the Earth is a sustainable system.
