The Rubber Sheet Analogy states that concept positions on a map can continuously change, while always maintaining the same relationship with the other ideas on the map. Start with a main idea, topic, or issue to focus on. A helpful way to determine the context of your concept map is to choose a focus question something that needs to be solved or a conclusion that needs to be reached. Once a topic or question is decided on, that will help with the hierarchical structure of the concept map. Then determine the key concepts. Find the key concepts that connect and relate to your main idea and rank them; most general, inclusive concepts come first, then link to smaller, more specific concepts. Finish by connecting concepts and creating linking phrases and words. A concept map is also not just a learning tool, but an ideal evaluation tool for educators measuring the growth of and assessing student learning. As students create concept maps, they reiterate ideas using their own words and help identify incorrect ideas and concepts; educators are able to see what students do not understand, providing an accurate, objective way to evaluate areas in which students do not yet grasp concepts fully.

When I had first approached this project, my first task was to define each of the words for more clarity as to what they meant and how they related to each other. After defining them, I decided to categorize every word plus an additional word in order to have 4 groups that all contained 5 words each. I admit that I am more of a categorical person, and group and placing things together has always worked out better for me. This part was based on my opinion as I group together words with similar themes or meanings or by how easy they could connect to each other. Simultaneously, while categorizing the words together, I was planning out how to make my actual map look presentable.

I will focus on my three focus students to prepare them for future lessons focused on main idea and details. Student A and the above level subgroup demonstrated advanced abilities to identify the main idea and describe details from a story for Lesson 2. It has been my experience taking online courses that utilizing a program such as MindTap to support the textbook and professor’s instruction to be extremely beneficial. MindTap is a useful tool that reinforces the textbook with homework exercises and provides services to the student such as Net Tutor and Questia. I found using MindTap easy to use and navigate, all of the components are well labeled. The majority of the time learning a subject can be difficult without the use of visual examples. I especially liked the fact that a full copy of the textbook was available within the MindTap program and accessible at any time.
The virtual field experience video is an insightful way to determine the effectiveness of a particular teaching practice. This video allowed me to also analyze the content of the lesson and the characteristics of students whom the lesson was taught. I was then able to look at the student population and teaching method to determine best teaching practices that was used by this Dr. Bear. In reviewing the video on Dr. Bear and conducting a task analysis sheet on the content of the lesson itself, I was able to follow the teaching practice, which appears to be aimed at determining from onset the developmental level of the students as well as their general knowledge of the lesson to be taught. This is achieved by allowing the students talk amongst themselves and share information freely and then input the pertinent information related to the lesson on a chart.
Concept attainment is an inquiry-based instructional strategy that is suitable for teaching notions that have an open set of attributes. Concepts have a name, a definition, examples, and critical attributes or characteristics. They are also ideas or abstractions that are formed by putting data into observable categories (Lemlech, 2010). The primary point of this model is to allow students to create their own definitions and understanding.

There are three main learning styles, the visual learners, auditory and kinesthetic learners. Visual learners mainly learn through seeing. They exhibit visual skills that are demonstrated in writing, reading, painting, sketching, manipulating images, fixing, interpreting visual images, have a good sense of direction and also create visual analogies and metaphors.
Stations or centers might be teacher-led if new knowledge is to be given or student-led if mastery is to be obtained on the information given by the teacher. Project-based is another strategy and one of the best ways to differentiate instruction due to the students’ needs and styles are addressed. Projects internalize help and support among students beside some academic skills.
