The relationship between confidence and its effect on sporting performance:
Confidence is an aspect that is crucial in sport and in all aspects of life. Confidence is now commonly talked about as a crucial part of sporting performance and how this affects sporting performance. Confidence is a part of the 4c’s regarding the topic of mental toughness. Research has been taken it is have been proven that having success has shown to affect the level of confidence and how that confidence can affect success (Covassin & Pero, 2004; Hays, Maynard, Thomas, & Bawden, 2007; Hays, Thomas, Maynard, & Bawden, 2009).The sporting world has recognised that sports psychology has become such a huge part of sports performance and how confidence has a part of success in sport (Vealey & Chase, 2008). This brings about confidence to the non elite athletes watching on as they see these athletes as “role models”. Elite athletes come under the same struggles as a non elite athlete would do. Athletes would experience different obstacles throughout sport, such as choking in a high pressured game and this would lower the self confidence level of the athlete just the same as a club level player would on a Saturday morning game. Unfortunatly once self confidence is lowered performance dips and the psychological mind of a performer expects to fail when taking part in sport (Hill, Hanton, Matthews, & Fleming, 2009). All who participate in sport experiences failure. Failure can help an individual or team to help athletes re evaluate performance and help them to improve and also focus on preparation, but if athletes don’t have the necessary skills to overcome setback and bounce back to regain full self confidence performance will drop (Gailli and Vealey,
This study was a within subject study because they tested a total of three hundred forty-eight varsity athletes and used all the tests on each athlete. Although the researchers could not control how the athletes felt throughout the experiment, they did control the tests and speed of recoveries each athlete received. Overall, the results that were found throughout the whole experiment was a triumph. The results show that the athletes with a pessimistic view are more likely to recover quickly because they become less pain tolerant and developed coping strategies. The athletes with the optimistic view who lack coping strategies experienced higher levels of negative emotions such as anger, depression, and anxiety as a result of not being in control of the rehabilitation, leads to a slower recovery.
In “Characteristics Contributing to the Success of a Sports Coach” “For coaches, communication often means making one’s point clear to athletes. Getting points across is essential to players’ success. The coach’s capacity to transfer knowledge (information) affects the outcome of both single contests and entire seasons. Then, too, communication is a two-way street. Successful coaches can interpret feedback given to them by players (and others) and use the feedback in making decisions.
Reading Presence by Amy Cuddy makes to believe there are much more dealing with same challenges. The more I read, the more I learn about our mindset, listening, failure, feeling as we don’t deserve to be here, feeling powerful and powerless. There’s are a quote in a book which states “ Power makes us approach, powerless makes us avoid.” When we think about positive things and having a positive outcome than we are more chance of approaching. While I was reading a passage on power and powerless, It made me think of time during my high school soccer tryout for varsity.
Confidence and nervousness were also two concepts that Messner et. al. found differed between commentary of male and female athletes. Again, in describing these traits in women, ambivalent language is often used- “That young lady Graf is relentless” (Messner et al., 1993). Using the phrase “young lady” by the commentator completely undermines the fact that Graf’s relentlessness was being applauded.
From the beginning of the Greek, Romans to our day-to-day life, sports has been affecting all its users. We can safely assume now that a body in motion will stay in motion, with that, a body at rest will tend to stay at rest. Our thoughts and our worries will flee our state of mind when we experience great physical activities. We’ve grown along with the fascinating culture of sports, we’ve all aged from our experiences and learned to build up from the past. As we continue to move on, sports and physical exertion will both increase and become more efficient.
This relates to the ability or techniques used by an athlete to deal with psychological stressors such as anxiety. Allen et al. (2011) have discussed how different trait dominance results in different coping strategies being displayed. This could be important form a coach’s perspective due to the fact that understanding their trait dominance and the coping strategy which is associated with bringing the best results for that trait, it is possible to individualise direction given to players regarding coping. In return, an athlete who is able to cope with the psychological pressure present in sport is likely to perform better.
Did you know that by some estimates, up to 60 percent of competitive athletes overtrain at some point? A recent study conducted showed that over 15 percent of 200 elite British athletes tested met the criteria for being overtrained, and thus, felt the effects of a “burnout” (Reynolds 1). To understand the toll that overtraining can take on an athlete’s life, consider Whitney Myers, a world class swimmer at the University of Arizona. In 2006, Myers won the women’s N.C.A.A. title in the 200 and 400-yard individual medleys, while going on to win gold in the 200-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Championships. Less than a year later, however, she stumbled under pressure at the 2007 Long-Course Championships, making the finals in only one
Have you wondered why many athletes who deal with serious problems, seem to succeed? Their success is mostly the result of a the sport psychologist, who is working with them to improve their mental state. Sport psychologists take a caring approach on personal and public matters. Studies have shown the various outcomes of using a sport psychologist, in many different sports. This is why there is usually a person behind the athlete in any sport, whether it is a sport psychologist and or a role model.
In life, people will experience different things that will have an influence on who they are as well as who they will become. These experiences are in direct correlation to future success. Some believe that most of these experiences are outside of one 's own control, such as where he was born, where he goes to school or even a financial situation. While this makes sense, there is one thing that is within one 's control that will greatly increase the likelihood of one 's achievements. Playing sports in high school has a positive impact on future success.

Nearly all Americans love sports but is it really worth it. In this generation, competitive sports has become more dangerous than ever sports experts are starting to worry that competitive sports has a more negative effect than a positive effect on children. Most competitive sports can lead to severe injuries, pressure which can lead the youth using illegal drugs, and all the money parents spend on their kids to play sports is ridiculous, and worst of all most children are starting to burn out of sports emotionally and physically. Competitive sports do not have a positive effect on all children because of the cost, pressure/injury, and enjoyment. Many will disagree and say that this is unacceptable , while others say that it is beneficial. Children should be able to be put in sport teams because most children play sports as a passion, and it not only benefits them with being athletic and healthy, It's also favorable to children because only its a game, it also teaches children morals, and life lessons. One reason Children should be able to play sports, is that playing sports is beneficial to the kids health.
We lost every game expect one for four years in a row. Losing for any athlete is a hard thing to overcome. All you want to do is win over and over. When athletes lose they can become a CORFer, Cut Off Reflected Failure (Whitbourne, 2011). When an athlete that develops this kind of behavior they will be less likely to wear their sports gear the day after their loss.
