As a member of a minority group the conflict theory speaks to me a lot, we try to get all the power that is/was taken from us. We have to proof ourselves on a daily basis to society and ourselves that we are equals and we should have the same amount of respect as anyone else. Conflict Theory American society today is made up of all three of the theories. In my opinion, these theories all thrive off each other as a whole. I feel that the chain is something like this, Symbolic Interactionism, as well as Functionalism, lead into Conflict Theory. However, I feel that Conflict Theory is by far the largest component American society is made from, here is why! First I would like to touch on Symbolic Interactionism, symbols we attach value or meaning.
Conflict theory has been used to describe the discrepancies in power and distribution of resources among the dominate group and the subordinate groups. Racial inequalities and racism among the groups has played a big role in the concept of conflict theory. Conflict theory examines the rising conflict between the dominate group, or white ruling class, and racial minorities, such as African Americans. This conflict and inequality among the races may be a reason why 20.2 percent of African American males die by homicide. In fact, African Americans are six times as likely as whites to be killed by homicide.
The importance of seeing inequality as a system is that stereotyped beliefs, because they become embedded in society, are widely held and supported by not only individuals, but social groups and institutions alike. Oppression does not end when one person decides to confront their own prejudices or when one law is passed which works toward guaranteeing equal rights for all individual; the struggle for equality it is an ongoing battle. Often, discrimination and inequality are confronted only when they are direct and visible. Yet, inequality is multifaceted and the perpetuation of inequality has become so entrenched in our social and political structure that it is often hidden behind ideas and practices that have become accepted as the norm.
In chapter one, "Privilege, Oppression, and Difference, Allan Johnson begins his argument that "difference is not the problem"( Johnson, pg 5 ). The author goes on to explain that difference by itself is not the problem, rather difference in conjunction with our ideas that cause fear. That being said, discrimination was a bigger problem in the past and it still is today. We starts with talking about Rodney King and racism he had received from police officers in Los Angeles. Johnson continues on with the idea that people are judged not for who they are or the things they have accomplished, but how they are perceived by others.
Throughout time, there have been groups of people that have been mistreated, and have organized movements that they hope will help them get the rights they deserve. Not only has this happened in the past, it happens everyday across the world. There are many minorities in our society and each day, these minorities stand up to the majority in a variety of ways. There’s also groups of people that have experienced the same things that make a minority. For example, women have recently been opening up about experiencing sexual assaults, standing up to the men that have assaulted them.
The conflict theory is a macro-level theory where theorists look at the unequal distribution of resources such as money, power, education, and social prestige. Those who are wealthier and more educated than others in the society hold more power over those who are not wealthy or as educated. Conflict theorists see this a lot in the educational system, where inequality is shown through the materials in the school, teachers in the classrooms, and topics being taught. This type of inequality leads to learning differences that emphasizes social inequalities. Macro-level sociology is looking at the bigger picture of the social process, such as stability and change throughout society.
Most fields of science rely on theories to explain centrally important issues, such as social phenomena, that have a wide range of applications. Sociologists attempt to describe human society though their theories, such as the structural-functionalism theory, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionalism. While the three theories attempt to describe how society functions the way it does, all three differ in their views of how humans are related to society and each other. In the structural-functionalism, the dominant view is that if the structures that exist are functional, then those structures should be preserved and maintained. Structure-functionalists tend focus on the interrelatedness to the social structures that make up society.

On the other hand, some people can also e a part of two majority groups, causing them to be extremely advantaged.
