In today’s construction industry construction waste is becoming a rising issue in today’s construction activities which is causing serious effects on the environment. According to Tom Napier, a research architect stated in his article entitled Construction Waste Management, that waste generated by construction activities, such as scrap, damaged or spoil materials, temporary and expendable materials and aids that are not included in the finished project, packaging materials, and waste generated by the workforce is classified as construction waste. In Malaysia illegal dumping is one of the most serious problem which is currently being faced by dumping along roadsides and swamps. This country implemented policies for handling waste generations such as the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (PPSPPA) which is governed by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and also the Standard Specifications for Building Works (SBW) which is governed by the Ministry of Works. The Environmental Quality Act 1974 (EQA) and the Pembinaan Malaysia Act 1994 (PMA) which is governed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Construction Industry Development Board respectively. The PPSPPA focuses more on domestic waste while the SBW responsible for contractors which deals with clearing, cleaning under the Public Work Department, which requires garbage and construction waste to be dispose twice a week in landfills or approved sites. According to Waste Quality and Waste Management on Managing Construction and Demolition Debris (n.d.), Scrap and recyclable materials can be used for a lot of stuff in the construction industry. Scrap materials such as joist off cuts can be cut up and used as stakes for headers in floor opening assembly. While leftover insulation can be used as ventilation baffles in the attics of buildings or installed as joist headers assembly in house envelopes. On the other hand recyclable materials such as asphalt roof shingles can be used to construct asphalt road surfaces. This asphalt is used to bind other materials such as aggregate to form a cohesive structure to produce a road with less crack occurring.
