Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. To begin with, there are multiple organizations in America that value the health and exposure of dangerous chemicals among citizens. Secondly, companies remove unsafe products and hazardous materials to prevent accidents in work, schools, houses and many other public places. Lastly protection to workers and families is the reason in which organizations such as the CPSC, FDA, AMS and RMS are still up to this date. These agencies share similar interests and differences in promoting a healthy environment. First the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injuries or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction (n.d.). producers of food, fiber, and specialty crops. The AMS also provides the agricultural industry with valuable services to ensure the quality and availability of wholesome food for consumers across the country. (n.d.). Like the CPSC, AMS also investigates chemical exposures, monitors health and product safety, but in addition monitors and responds to emergencies, protects food and water and research chemicals. UNSAFE PRODUCTS Even though corporations do not wish to cause harm to consumers, they have in fact all too often done so when the drive to maximize profit or survive in the marketplace has taken priority over concern for consumer safety. An massive range of consumer products including many foods, drugs and medical devices, vehicles, domestic products, and cosmetics have been acknowledged as dangerous to various degrees. Around 70,000 Americans are suspected to die yearly from product-related accidents, and millions more suffer incapacitating injuries at a cost of over $100 billion in property damage, lost wages insurance, litigation, and medical expenses. Even though certain products are intrinsically dangerous, much evidence suggests that corporations, in their almost single-minded pursuit of profit, have been negligent- sometimes criminally- in their disregard for consumer safety.
Just earlier this very year, there was a horrible fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory where 146 workers perished. Some died from the fire and others from jumping from the windows in order to escape it. Triangle Shirtwaist has brought the plight of these poor workers to the forefront as the public takes notice of the lack of safety measures in place at not just this factory, but many similar workplaces, and demands that something be done to prevent such a tragedy from occurring again. I believe one of the first steps to creating a safer workplace is having government regulations in place that prevent the mistreatment of workers and ensure that employees can escape in case of emergency. The regulations themselves should not be just broad, but address the many issues that workers face in order to give the workers the safest and healthiest working environment possible.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was an influential event in American history that caused workers and business owners all of the country to revisit their work-related regulations. Many dangers that occurred as a result of the factory owners’ actions caused the tragedy to be more harmful than necessary. Other preventable mistakes made by the firemen and their equipment added to the tragic nature of this event. America has learned that factories and businesses need safer rules and work environments to protect their employees. Because of this tragic event in the nation’s history, the government passed an abundance of laws to support the safety of workers and their work conditions.

The lack of safety regulations in the building, which caused said tragedy, resulted in a crusade by the American people, for nationwide workplace parameters. Since this catastrophe, working conditions have improved significantly, and organizations have been put into place to ensure that buildings are in accordance with health and fire regulations. The Farm Service Agency was formed to support farmers in times of need by offering loans, payments, and disaster relief programs. Because the risks that can come with growing food depend on the economy, food preferences and acts of nature, the government felt it was necessary to protect the people and operations that provide food for Americans. The controversies that have arisen in the last few decades regarding the FSA center on the way the assistance has been distributed and the fact that Americans now import much of their foodstuffs. According to the FSA, their agency provides services to farm operations including loans, commodity price supports, conservation payments, and disaster assistance.
