Cooperation and conflict is a theme in history that greatly affects the human population. Studies have been completed to test if the increase of conflict in communities result in more cooperation. These studies have shown that although there is not a direct increase in cooperation shown in the communities, there is an increase in the cooperative behaviors demonstrated by the individuals in the community (Silva, 2014). These cooperative and conflicting behaviors have been shown in the workplace throughout the growing of America. The two novels entitled The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser demonstrate the theme of cooperation and conflict many times throughout the novels. Often times, the effect of one lead to the cause of the other. Cooperation and conflict occurred between Jurgis and the many jobs he encountered as he struggled to make a life in Chicago. The founders of the corporations, Ray Kroc founded McDonald’s and Walt Disney founded Disney, were alike in many ways. Besides being close in age and putting a stop on their high school education, both Kroc and Disney were outstanding at making their products appealing to children. After realizing the success that had occurred when marketing toward a young audience, the McDonald’s and Disney corporations signed a contract, agreeing to promote each other for at least ten years. Disney would advertise McDonald’s by providing the fast food chain in Disney theme parks. In return, McDonald’s advertised Disney by using a majority of Disney characters as Happy Meal toys. This agreement benefitted both Disney and McDonald’s, allowing them to sell more products (Schlosser, 2001, pg. 30-40).
