One day you wake up glad because you got an extra hour of sleep, and just six months later you wake up sad because you lost an hour of sleep. Twice a year, every year, we face a change in time construction and in our daily schedule, causing a dramatic shift in our regular routines. Daylight Savings is a controversial topic that has caused great uprising regarding its usefulness. Despite some of its benefits, the Daylight Savings time change is unnecessary due to its direct impact on society’s well being and it’s ineffective purpose. Although it once regarded as being useful, the modern day society has to endure its negative results. Health, in total, is considered the most important thing to people; however, human health is hindered by the time fluctuation. The spontaneous shift in time does not settle well with the body’s ritual processes and its “internal clock...does not adjust” (Source E). A good night's rest is possibly one of the best natural medications and allows the body to fully rejuvenate, and the time change infringes upon this. Sleep is so important in consideration to a person’s attitude towards their day and their performance because it sets their mood. Therefore, the time change’s effect on the human body does not comply with what is expected on a daily basis and further notions expelling the time change from the calendar. In addition, the time change takes a toll on energy consumption. Although it does reduce the electricity needed for light, it increases total energy usage by two to four …show more content…
Although we have all lived with it for an extended period of time and have adjusted, its negative outcomes outweigh any of it’s benefits. Therefore, the forthcoming generations should try to move past this outdated time system and focus on bettering themselves and their future, rather than reliving the
Bogard states “already the world health organization classifies working the night shift as a probable human carcinogen.” he also says “Our bodies need darkness to produce the hormone melatonin.” Both phrases use logic to persuade the audience. Humans need melatonin, because it “keeps cetain cancers from developing.” Paul states “sleep disorders have been linked to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and depression.”
While proponents can tout the seemingly innumerable benefits of daylight savings time (DST), like its engrained tradition or pragmatic advantages, a deeper analysis proves that this superficial and relatively fruitless venture to be the one of extreme manifestation of popular verisimilitude perpetrated by our affinity for stability and discomfort with change. It is therefore apparent that such abstractions need be replaced with more empirical measurements so a made reasonable and balanced conclusion can actually be made. The debate over daylight savings time, like many of the other debates that plague radio waves and five-minute segments on the nightly news, comes down to simple dollar bills and numbers. David T. Wagner, assistant professor
Good morning fellow classmates and ______, I hope my speech today, will keep you on the edge of your seats. Hopefully that will be because you're interested, not because you are so anxious to leave. Have you ever felt depressed or have chosen not to do something because it is too dark outside? Well, that’s why I am discussing today why they're absolutely, should not be daylight savings time. There are three major and significant motives to why there should not be daylight savings time.
Analysis Daylight Saving time Twice a year, most Americans adjust their clocks before bedtime to prepare for Daylight savings time. Daylight savings time is a wonder tool for mankind, it maximizes sun light in the day time second, it is safer for travel third, and Daylight savings is energy savings tool. I am going to go over a few pros so state my opposition for Daylight savings time. Many studies have investigated the benefits and cost savings of Daylight Savings time.
Last night I went to bed at about 9:00 PM, which is about one hour and thirty minutes earlier than my daily goal for this week. I plan to continue this "earlier than my goal" behavior for it preps me for what is coming (Daylight Savings Time). I have been keeping track of my behavior through journaling my bed time. I am really looking forward to Saturday because if I continue achieving my daily goal of "no later than 10:30" for this week, I will reward myself with a cup of coffee in the
(Kotchen and Grant 8). The evidence acknowledges that daylight savings was supposed to save energy but instead it consumes more. Although the increase is only 1 percent it is considered highly statistically significant. The
The argument of daylight saving time’s worth is one that has sparked controversy all over America. Some think that daylight saving time should be eliminated because it holds no value in society; however, others believe that it does good for the citizens of earth. People keep arguing back and forth, with the help of substantial evidence from both sides, and a clear winner has not been claimed. While some may argue that daylight saving time is doing more harm than good, it is beneficial in several ways.
The same holds true for Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands and more than 160 countries. An Indian chief, who, by the way is not related to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, was told about the upcoming Daylight Savings Time switch and was asked what he thought about the idea. He answered saying only liberals would cut off one end of a blanket and sow it on other end and believing he now has a longer blanket. Maintaining Daylight Savings Time would place Massachusetts into the Atlantic Time Zone. Other states in the Eastern Time Zone would obviously need to follow suit to avoid disruptions to financial markets, broadcast schedules and travelers to mention three concerns.
However, the opposing side argues that these claims are not true. Energy can be saved by reducing the demand for lighting, but it is also used for demand for heating and cooling. This contradicts the claim that DST can save energy. Moreover, because DST causes sleep disruption, car accidents have been seen to increase after the designated beginning of Daylight Saving Time. The opposing side also claims that DST also disturbs the body’s circadian rhythms, and caused increases in
Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.
Daylight saving time affects the world negatively because it causes health issues, increases both electricity usage and gasoline consumption. As a student, I do not get enough sleep already due to the amount of homework I receive. Daylight saving time does not help my situation for the better. In fact, it can cause health issues such as “restlessness, sleep disruption and shorter sleep duration” (O’Connor).
Plus, the loss of sleep reduces concentration and brain processing speed, meaning tasks take longer to complete. It’s estimated that every time the clocks are changed, the US economy loses almost half a billion dollars! That lost hour of sleep does more though, as there are well documented health issues that arise due to a lack of sleep. The two most
University students including myself time and again lay off sleep for other happenings such as studying, doing homework or even just staying up for the night with a friend. Through a biological clock called the Circadian rhythm, our bodies follow the twenty-four hour cycle of each day and night. Throughout the week, postponing sleep and missing meals makes it arduous to concentrate in class. After lunch, I tend to grow heavy-eyed and tired which leads to me struggling to focus on my other courses. In the afternoon, this impacts my body because it does not give me energy, but instead makes me snooze earlier in the day.

I’m Nur Atiqah binti maznan and today I will deliver a speech title ‘People should care more about sleep’ Most of us in this class will say that we not get enough sleep because of all assignments, lab reports and so on like just now. So, we called this situation as sleep deprivation which means a condition where people not get enough sleep. We are in the same shoes, so no worries.
