Chapter 3 Review of Literature

Dealing with disaster is a social process that requires public support for planning. It needs to be sustainable in the light of challenges posed by non-renewable resource utilization, climate change, population growth, and imbalances of wealth. Emergency planning is a process with updated changes in circumstances for systematic plan of disasters and other future contingencies. Emergency, not only includes toxic spills and industrial explosions but even the floods, storms and earthquakes. Developing countries like India are prone to get earthquakes, floods, road accidents, cyclonic storms and there by many health hazards. Being over populated, chances of injury, infection and communicable disease are quite common.

The impact of disaster can affect the national wealth, trade and livelihoods. Cyclone Haiyan , 2013 was such an incident though many lives were saved by evacuation but nearly 7300 people died and 29,000 were injured. 2011 tsunami has completely devastated and damaged the roads, railways and networks. During the period of 2004–2013, almost two billion people were directly affected by disaster. Healthcare management in case of natural or man -made disaster is a challenge. 2010 …show more content…
