The Southern States began to divorce the United States when South Carolina seceded after Lincoln was elected President in 1860. In the years 1777 to 1865, the African American people, also known as Blacks, were used as slaves for the white men of America. Eventually, enslavement was abolished and was outlawed, as it is today. Many of us view slavery as unnatural and it causes mixed feelings from the heart of each human being. Slavery caused lot of harm by destroying lives of the people who could have been happy back in the day. Food is a critical part to the environment that a community lives in, yet food is not always just. Food justice is an important part of environmental justice, and Robert Gottlieb studied how food impacts communities. Gottlieb explained how food justice has links to equity, empowerment, and social justice as well. This area of justice “addresses issues of health, globalization, worker rights and working conditions, disparities regarding access to environmental (or food) goods, land use and respect for the land, and ultimately, how our production, transportation, distribution and consumption systems are organized” (7). Food (in)justices and the other presented issues are all around in society today.
The essay repeatedly states that we do not know what our food goes through, where it comes from, and that we are ignorant to the food industry. Berry says, “The consumer must be kept from discovering that in the food industry, the overriding concerns are not quality and health, but volume and price.” In basic terms, the food industry does not care about the health of their consumers but their profit. In the 1800's slavery was a key issue that divided our state into two territories. the government had ideas on how to deal with slavery but their ideas were different from individuals and groups. the actions taken by the federal government and the Abolitionist Movement helped shape our history and the freedom and rights of African-Americans.
Onychectomy, or declawing, is a surgical procedure to remove cat’s claws, usually for reasons convenient to the owner. Many people support the declawing of cats for the protection of their furniture and children. Cat claws can quickly tear up furniture and scratches often make people sick. Because scratching is a deeply ingrained instinct in cats, if there is no appropriate spot or post for them to scratch at, they will be forced to substitute furniture or other objects. However, declawing is a dangerous and inhumane practice that is unnecessary for cats.
Intro: When people eat food they do not think about what is in it, or how it is made. The only thing people care about is what the food tastes like and how much they get. During the 1900’s the meat packing industry had not regulations of any kind. All that mattered to the industry was that they made as much money as possible with as little expenditure as possible. During this times people were often made sick and died either from working conditions or poor food quality.
The Food Industry The food industry is the worldwide diversified industry which has to do with anything relevant with food from food education to marketing but principally the industry produces and or provides food to essentially all people on the planet. The only people who are excluded from the food industry are self-sustaining farmers and hunter-gatherers. It is one of the largest industries in the world and continues to grow because people need food and the population is increasing every day. In America, the food industry possesses such an important role, yet there are so many problems within the industry which is ruining the society as we know it.
